No. 1 Hoggard (5-0, 1-0) at No. 6 New Hanover (2-3, 1-0)

Tim’s Take: There aren’t many rivalries in the state better than this one. Hoggard took a one-game lead in the series with a comfortable win on the road a season ago. The game is back at Legion Stadium for a second year in a row because of conference realignment. The unbeaten Vikings will again enter as heavy favorites. If you haven’t seen quarterback Matthew Boring play, he’s worth the price of admission. The junior is the clear frontrunner for CCC Offensive Player of the Year. He has completed 79 percent of his passes (95-for-120) for 1,071 yards and 12 TDs with only two interceptions. As good as the offense has been, the defense has been just as impressive. Sophomore lineback Graham McNeely had four of the seven sacks a week ago. Panther Creek completed just four passes for eight yards on September 12 and West Brunswick had three completions for 47 yards a week ago. New Hanover has had two weeks to prepare for this one. In their 35-28 win at North Brunswick on September 19, senior running backs Tony Clark-Nelson and Javonie Webb both surpassed the 100-yard mark. The Wildcats will need to run the ball effectively to keep it close, but that won’t be easy because Hoggard will likely put eight defenders in the box and force their rival to try to beat them through the air. I expect the Vikings to prove once again why they are among the top 8A teams in the state with another 20-plus point victory.
No. 3 West Brunswick (4-2, 1-1) at No. 7 North Brunswick (2-4, 1-1)

Series history: West Brunswick leads 30-9
Last meeting: North Brunswick won 38-19 in 2024
Tim’s Take: The Scorpions have won 10 consecutive games against county opponents dating back to 2021, but that streak will likely be challenged tonight in what I expect to be a high-scoring contest. North Brunswick averages 31.8 points and West Brunswick isn’t far behind at 27.7. North Brunswick quarterback Jonah Campbell is the best player in the area that nobody is talking about. He has thrown for an area-best 1,121 passing yards and 10 touchdowns with only one interception. He will need to play well, but the Scorpions also need to establish their running game with Kane Jenrette (93 carries for 822 yards and nine TDs) if they want to come out on top. After getting off to a fantastic 4-1 start, the Trojans traveled to powerhouse Hoggard a week ago and weren’t very competitive. One of the key question entering tonight is how West Brunswick will bounce back. Another is the availabilty of standout junior Jaquell Davis on the offensive side of the ball. He had 440 yards through the first four games, but had just one carry against Laney on September 19 and none last Friday. My prediction is based on that final question. If Davis has more than 15 carries, I’ll take the Trojans. If he can’t go, give me Campbell and the Scorpions.
No. 10 Topsail (0-6, 0-2) at No. 4 Laney (3-3, 1-1)

Tim’s Take: A late defensive stand gave Laney a huge bounce-back win last week against county rival Ashley. With another victory tonight very likely, the Buccaneers should enter their bye week with a winning record. Expect running backs Ellis Williams, Jeremiah Brown and Joquain Dingle to touch the ball plenty against a Topsail defense that allows an area-worst 38.7 points. The Pirates have scored only one touchdown in each of the past five games, but a bright spot from last Friday’s game was the play of sophomore quarterback Tyler Vickers. He was 11-for-18 for a career-high 174 yards and one TD. Getting the ball in the hands of playmaker Damarion Smith should still be a main priority. He took a bubble screen 30 yards to the end zone for just his second touchdown of the season in a 29-6 loss to North Brunswick.
East Central Conference Games
Clinton (2-3, 0-0) at No. 2 Pender (5-0, 0-0)

Tim’s Take: The East Central Conference title won’t be decided tonight, but the winner of this one will put themselves in a great position to challenge preseason favorite East Duplin. Pender rushed for 448 yards in last week’s 46-28 win at Anson. Through five games, the Patriots are averaging 439 yards on the ground and 9.2 yards per carry. Quarterback Austin Deal took over the team lead (564 yards) after finishing with 155 and two scores last Friday. Zeke Williams (527 yards), Jaheim Lambe (452 yards) and ZyQuan Murphy (417 yards) give Pender one of the most formidable backfields in the state. After reaching the state championship game in 2023, Clinton went just 2-8 a season ago. The Dark Horses look to be getting back on track. They snapped a three-game losing streak by pulling off a 37-36 upset over Whiteville on September 19. In that game, Miles McCallop threw for 226 yards and two scores. He also had a pair of rushing TDs. Until someone shows they can slow down the Patriots, I’ll keep picking them to win.
South Lenoir (3-2, 0-0) at No. 9 Trask (2-3, 0-0)
Kickoff time: 7 p.m.
Series history: First meeting
Tim’s Take: It’s hard to get a gauge on either of these two teams, because their five victories have come against opponents with a combined record of 4-24. South Lenoir hasn’t beaten a team with a win, and they suffered a 20-6 loss to 1-5 North Lenoir, so that tells me Trask is the favorite. The Titans have beaten East Columbus and West Bladen and also hung close with East Bladen and South Brunswick. I expect running backs Tyreek Moore (90 carries for 588 yards and 6 TDs) and Jason Henry (57 carries for 490 yards and 7 TDs) to have strong performances in a comfortable win that gets the Titans back to .500
Southeastern Conference Game
Red Springs (2-3, 0-0) at No. 8 South Brunswick (3-2, 0-0)
Kickoff time: 7 p.m.
Series history: Tied 5-5
Last meeting: Red Springs won 38-12 in 2018
Tim’s Take: Both teams enter their conference opener coming off a bye week. South Brunswick is hoping it didn’t slow down the momentum of a three-game winning streak. During that stretch, the offense averaged 316 yards per game. Senior quarterback Jayden Daniels is playing at a high level. He’s completing 64 percent of his passes (57-for-89) for 869 yards and 10 TDs with only two interceptions. His favorite target has been Edward Young, who has 21 catches for 482 yards and 7 TDs. The Cougars also have a solid running back in Amerius Revels. He’s surpassed the 100-yard mark three times. After allowing 41 points per game last fall, South Brunswick’s defense has been much improved. That unit is allowing only 24.4 points through five games and 16.3 during this winning streak. Junior linebacker Nate Earley averages an area-best 14 tackles per game. The Cougars have forced nine turnovers (five interceptions and four fumbles). Red Springs’ only two victories have come against winless Anson (32-30) and Douglas Byrd (35-18). The defense has struggled, but the offense is pretty potent. Quarterback Chase Boone is 41-for-62 for 762 yards and 11 TDs with only one intercepetion. Taquan Ellerbe has 15 catches for 364 yards and seven scores. If South Brunswick can hold those two in check, the winning streak should reach four.
