No. 1 Hoggard (8-1, 6-0) at No. 5 New Hanover (5-3, 3-2)

Tim’s Take: For most of the season it looked like this rivalry game was going to once again determine the Mideastern Conference champion, but New Hanover’s stunning loss a week ago to West Brunswick gave Hoggard its second straight title. There is still always a lot at stake when these two meet, especially with the series being tied at 30 wins for each program. The Vikings gave coach Craig Underwood his 100th career victory in dominant fashion last Friday night. Hoggard has also won 13 consecutive MEC games since suffering a 10-7 loss at New Hanover on October 28, 2022. Sophomore quarterback Matthew Boring is one of the frontrunners for conference player of the year. He leads the area with 1,857 yards and 17 TDs. Look for him to get the ball to playmaker Nas Session early and often. The Vikings can still improve in the running game, so I expect Underwood will challenge his lineman to be physical against a really talented front seven for New Hanover that is trying to prove last week was just a fluke. The Wildcats seemed to be making strides offensively by putting up 79 points in wins against North Brunswick and Laney, but turnovers proved to be costly last Friday. New Hanover doesn’t need to play a perfect game in order to win this game, but it certainly cant’ beat itself. One of the big keys will be protecting quarterback Jacob Monroe. If he has time in the pocket, he could have a big night completing passes to Zeus Batts, Kellum Brown and Harrison Isear.
No. 8 North Brunswick (5-4, 2-4) at No. 3 Ashley (7-2, 4-2)
Kickoff time: 7 p.m.
Series history: North Brunswick leads 8-1
Last meeting: North Brunswick won 34-14 in 2023
Tim’s Take: This should be a great test for both teams as they prepare for the playoffs. North Brunswick has won the past six meetings, but Ashley enters as the slight favorite at home. The Screaming Eagles are looking to tie the 2004 team for most victories in a season with eight. That would give them a chance to make history in the first round of the playoffs. Senior running back Jaelan Brewington needs only 29 yards to surpass 1,000 for the second year in a row. He had a strong performance last week against Topsail with 19 carries for 105 yards and two TDs. Classmate Quinn Bentley also found the end zone twice and came away with an interception late in the fourth quarter to seal the win. Those two will get plenty of touches again against a Scorpion defense that allowed 10.1 yards per carry in an overtime loss against Laney a week ago. In that game, North Brunswick had 191 rushing yards in the first half, but only 54 in the second half and overtime. Chris Webb and Ty Whiters are explosive wide receivers that will need to make some plays in order to open things up for running backs Kane Jenrette and Calvin Webb.
No. 6 Topsail (4-4, 3-3) at No. 7 Laney (5-4, 4-2)

Tim’s Take: After rallying for an overtime victory at North Brunswick a week ago, Laney faces another tough test against a Topsail team that is looking to bounce back after suffering back-to-back losses to Hoggard and Ashley. The Buccaneers got a stellar performance from junior running back Joquin Dingle last Friday night. He had 24 carries for 252 yards and a touchdown. Senior standout wide receiver Hampton Roderick is expected to return from an injury that has kept him out since the second week of the season. Roderick hauled in 82 catches for 1,401 yards and 10 scores as a junior. Expect quarterback Kolbe Little to look his way a lot as they try to regain some chemistry before the 4A playoffs begin in two weeks. If the Pirates are going to pull off the upset, they are going to need more production out of the passing game. Eli Hebron had just 10 yards and a pair of interceptions in the loss to Ashley. The Pirates have shown the ability to run the ball, but Laney’s defense did an incredible job taking that away from North Brunswick in the season half a week ago.
No. 10 West Brunswick (2-7, 1-5) at No. 13 South Brunswick (0-8, 0-5)

Tim’s Take: West Brunswick is coming off its biggest win under second-year coach Shane Handy. The Trojans finished with a season-high 380 yards of offense in a 24-21 victory over New Hanover. It was just the fourth win in 30 games dating back to 2021 and first over a 4A program since September 23, 2022 when they beat Ashely 56-49. Sophomore quarterback Josiah Borton went 12-for-20 for 189 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Running back Javonta Daniels was his usual dominant self, finishing with 35 carries for 171 yards. The senior should have a big game against a South Brunswick defense that 40.5 point per game. The Cougars saw their losing streak reach 15 games a week ago with a 49-0 loss at Hoggard in which they managed to generate only 39 yards of offense. The past three games in this series have all been decided by seven points or fewer. West Brunswick earned a thrilling 43-42 win a season ago when Joseph Hamric caught a 9-yard touchdown with no time remaining and then connected on the extra points. The Trojans also had a 21-14 victory in 2021, while South Brunswick won by a score of 45-40 in 2022.
Waccamaw Conference
No. 4 South Columbus (8-1, 5-0) at No. 2 Whiteville (8-1, 5-0)
Kickoff time: 7:30 p.m.
Series history: South Columbus leads 20-12
Last meeting: Whiteville won 53-0 in 2023
Tim’s Take: The atmosphere at historic Legion Stadium should be electric as the rivals square off with the Waccamaw Conference title on the line. The winner will also likely receive a top-five seed for the 2A playoffs. Whiteville is currently at No. 4 in the RPI, while South Columbus sits at No. 6. The Wolfpack have won the past five meetings, including three in a row by a combined score of 165-7. Whiteville enters as a favorite, but it would be a surprise if the game goes to a running clock at any point in the second half. The Stallions are coming off a bye, so they’ve had two weeks to prepare. It will be important for running backs Rush Blackwell (1,064 yards and 15 TDs) and Briar Johnson (720 yards and 15 TDs) to get going early. South Columbus has shown the ability to throw the ball, but it’s not built to come from behind. Whiteville coach JP Price has plenty of offensive weapons at his disposal. The ground game is led by Cam McKvian and Nallegem Powell, who have combined for 22 touchdowns, while standout wide receiver Will Fisher has found the end zone a total of eight times. Defensive back Caleb Johnson has an incredible seven interceptions, including four that he has returned for a touchdown.
No. 9 Pender (6-3, 3-2) at No. 12 Trask (6-3, 2-3)
Kickoff time: 7:30 p.m.
Series history: Pender leads 13-8
Last meeting: Trask won 58-28 in 2023
Tim’s Take: Expect a lot of points and very few pass attempts in this contest between two of the top-five scoring offenses in the area. Pender’s Jeremiah Johnson is quietly having one of the best seasons among 1A players across the state. He’s already up to 1,771 yards and 27 touchdowns. He’s surpassed the 200-yard mark in each of the past three games and six of nine over the course of the season. If the Patriots are able to make a deep playoff run, he could surpass 2,500 yards. Trask continues to rely heavily on a pair of experienced seniors (Sherron Henderson and Asher Eason) and two talented sophomores (Jaiden Young and Kamajah Wilson) on both sides of the ball. The Titans started 5-0 before dropping three in a row. They got back on track with a 55-0 victory at winless East Columbus a week ago. The latest 2A playoff projects from HighSchoolOT have Trask as one of the final five teams in, so a win should lock up a spot.
No. 15 East Columbus (0-9, 0-5) at No. 14 West Columbus (1-7, 0-5)
Kickoff time: 7:30 p.m.

Tim’s Take: These rivals have had rough seasons up to this point, so this game will be more about pride than anything else. West Columbus has won the past four meetings. The last two haven’t been close (42-6 and 55-0), but the talent level is closer this season. After being shut out in their first four conference games, the Vikings scored a pair of touchdowns a week ago against Pender on passes from Larry Graham to fellow sophomore Santonio Vereen. East Columbus also only has two touchdowns in five conference games. The Gators have an exciting sophomore of their own in wide receiver Demetrius Dexter. Turnovers have plagued these teams all season, so both coaches would love to see their offense protect the ball.
