COASTAL PREPS THREE STARS OF THE NIGHT

VOLLEYBALL

No. 4 Laney 3, No. 2 Ashley 0

(26-24, 25-21, 25-20)

The Buccaneers completed the season sweep with a great defensive effort that featured 67 digs.

Four players reached double figures, led by 17 digs from libero Kaitlyn Dreimann. Kara Williams had 13, while Libby Harrington and Abbey Hendren both finished with 11.

Laney’s (12-3, 6-2 Carolina Coast) offensive attack was balanced. Anleigh Austin put down eight kills, and Imani Vanderhaar added seven. Harrington and Grace Johnson both had six.

Emma White handed out 17 assists, while Hendren chipped in 12.

Ashley (13-9, 4-4) got eight kills and 12 digs from Molly Lundberg.

Libero Madison Dameron came up with 16 digs. Kinley Carpenter filled in at setter and had 15 assists.

The Buccaneers play at Topsail on Thursday night at 6. The Screaming Eagles visit North Brunswick at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

No. 3 Topsail 3, No. 11 North Brunswick 0

Right-side hitter Charlotte Latta hit .500 by putting down 11 kills on 20 swings with only one error.

Kinsley Strnad added eight kills, while Mary Boardstarr and Ava O’Reilly finished with five apiece.

Topsail (12-5, 5-2 Carolina Coast) setter Allison Losey had 17 assists and six digs. Anaya Redd chipped in nine assists and eight digs.

The Pirates welcome Laney at 6 p.m. Thursday. North Brunswick (7-7, 2-5) has a home match against West Brunswick on Thursday night at 6.

Clinton 3, No. 12 Pender 0

(25-17, 25-17, 25-20)

Libero Eden Gurganus came up with 16 digs and served a pair of aces, but the Patriots were swept.

Victoria Wells finished with seven kills and three blocks. Madison Whaley added four kills and three digs.

Pender (8-10, 1-5 East Central) hosts SW Onslow on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Three goals in the second half lifted the Buccaneers to a home victory in a key match between Carolina Coast Conference championship contenders.

Tristan Mouney, Andres Torres Romero, and Landon Reese all scored. Alvaro Hernandez Rodriguez handed out a pair of assists.

Laney (15-1, 4-1) goalkeeper Carson Mattox made two saves.

Keinner Martinez scored in the first half to put New Hanover (10-3, 3-2) in front.

The Buccaneers play at Topsail on Thursday at 6 p.m. The Wildcats will try to bounce back when they visit Hoggard at 6 p.m. Thursday.

No. 1 Hoggard 10, No. 10 North Brunswick 1

The Vikings built a 9-1 halftime lead and then ended the match by mercy rule with a final goal.

Wake Forest commit Harry Dyer scored two goals and dished out one assist. Fellow midfielder Sawyer Ingham also found the back of the net twice.

Hoggard (11-0-1, 5-0 Carolina Coast) got one goal and one assist from Nash Beery, Garrett Hall, James McLean, and Asa Morello.

The other goals were scored by Joseph Dehmer and AJ Ingram.

Jace Tucker finished with three assists, while Marrs Searles and Joey Zapotocky both had one.

Next up is a home match against New Hanover at 6 p.m. Thursday. North Brunswick (6-7-2, 0-5) plays at West Brunswick on Thursday night at 6.

No. 5 Ashley 4, No. 8 West Brunswick 2

Senior Colby Shoffner scored twice and added an assist for the victorious Screaming Eagles.

Ashley (6-5-1, 2-3) also got one goal and one assist from Cameron Wallace.

Jake Mungo scored the other goal, while Cole Foland dished out one assist.

Both teams will be back in action Thursday at 6 p.m. The Screaming Eagles visit Richlands, and West Brunswick (7-5-1, 1-5) hosts North Brunswick.

No. 6 Coastal Christian 7, Grace Christian 1

The Centurions finished with a season-high seven goals to cruise at home in a nonconference match.

Ben Morgan had an outstanding performance with four goals. Robert Achilles chipped in two goals and one assist, while Paulo Castillo scored once and dished out an assist.

Coastal Christian (6-8-2) got one assist apiece from Lincoln Adkins, Luke Burton, Christian Eddy, and Ruan Wilson.

Goalkeeper Ty Forrester made four saves.

A road contest against Liberty Christian Academy on Thursday at 4 p.m. awaits the Centurions.

GIRLS TENNIS

Hoggard 6, West Brunswick 0

Match 2 of doubleheader

The Vikings completed the doubleheader sweep by dropping only five games in six singles matches.

Kenzie Le (No. 2), Emmy Brookshire (No. 3), and Grace Weiss (No. 4) earned 8-0 victories.

Hoggard’s (13-1, 11-0 Carolina Coast) other three points came from Zoe Ten Brink (8-1 at No. 1), Celine Rineer (8-2 at No. 5), and Liza Bulluck (8-2 at No. 6).

Doubles weren’t contested with the outcome already decided.

The Vikings travel to Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Wednesday at 4 p.m. West Brunswick (4-7, 4-7) visits North Brunswick at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Match 1 of doubleheader

Allie Sauer (No. 2), Emmy Brookshire (No. 3), and Celine Rineer (No. 6) all had 8-0 singles wins.

Libby Williamson (8-3 at No. 1), Grace Weiss (8-2 at No. 4), and Laura Beth Jenkins (8-5 at No. 5) also prevailed.

All three doubles teams had 8-0 victories – Braelyn Roberson/Zannah Roberson (No. 1), Williamson/Zoe Ten Brink (No. 2), and Sauer/Liza Bulluck (No. 3).

Topsail 7, North Brunswick 2

Taylor Locke won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles, while Mollie Hasinski (No. 3) and Adelia Ellington (No. 6) had identical 6-1, 6-0 victories to help the Pirates prevail.

The other two singles points came from Avery Graham (6-4, 7-5 at No. 1) and Quinn Goodwin (6-0, 6-2 at No. 4).

Topsail (3-9, 2-8) picked up a pair of wins in doubles from the teams of Blair Sommer/Corallynn Miller (8-0 at No. 2) and Avery Procida/Heidi Pasquantonio (8-1 at No. 3).

Senior Ani Shaw had a great day for North Brunswick (0-14, 0-11). She had a 6-1, 7-5 victory at No. 2 singles and then teamed up with Amelia Bush for an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles.

Both teams play at home Thursday at 4 p.m. The Pirates host Laney, while the Scorpions welcome West Brunswick.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Pender 23, South Lenoir 32, Clinton 83

Pender’s David Montoya secured a victory of less than two seconds over a pair of challengers.

Montoya crossed the finish line in 18:44.26, which was narrowly ahead of teammate Eduardo Mendoza (18:45.74) and Wilmington Christian Academy’s James Dawson (18:45.84).

The Patriots had five of the top nine finishers to secure the team win. Cody Rivenbark was sixth in 19:44.68, Ernesto Garcia Maurilio placed eighth in 20:17.61, and Justice Mullins finished ninth in 20:18.94.
