FOOTBALL
No. 3 Laney 34, No. 8 New Hanover 7
Four touchdown passes in the first half from Joseph Stough helped the Buccaneers earn their first victory at Legion Stadium since 2008.
In that game, Oliver Klokman made a 22-yard field goal with 44.7 seconds remaining to put Laney on top 10-7.
Stough had his best performance of the season by going 19 of 27 for 287 yards. He connected with Niko Warren for a 64-yard touchdown just over two minutes into the game.
The lead grew to 21-0 after the first quarter on TD catches from Emery Brown (21 yards) and Kilby Theiss-Dixon (66 yards).
Theiss-Dixon also scored on an 18-yard catch with 5:49 remaining in the second quarter. The senior wide receiver finished with 124 yards.
Laney’s (4-5, 3-2 Carolina Coast) final points came on a Jeremiah Brown run early in the fourth quarter, but the extra point that would have started a running clock was missed.
The lone touchdown for New Hanover (2-7, 1-4) was on a 17-yard pass from Julian Robles to Jayden George with 5:32 remaining in the game.
No. 1 Hoggard 67, No. 4 North Brunswick 7
The Vikings set new program records for points in a game and margin of victory to clinch at least a share of the Carolina Coast Conference title.
A win at Scott Braswell Stadium next week against Ashley would give Hoggard (8-1, 5-0) the title outright.
Standout junior kicker Kanoa McGee made a 31-yard field goal with the clock running late in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring and surpass the 66-point total from a 2011 victory over Ashley.
The largest margin of victory prior to Friday was 57 points, which came in a 65-8 season-opening victory over Athens Drive in 2001.
Quarterback Matthew Boring found tight end Nakula O’Connor in the end zone for a 26-yard touchdown on the opening possession of the game.
North Brunswick (5-4, 2-3) responded nicely by scoring the first time it touched the ball. MJ Smith caught a bubble screen pass from Eli Talley and raced 53 yards.
The ensuing kickoff was caught by Lyric Pryor at the 22-yard line. He initially made a move to the right side of the field, but was cut off by a pair of Scorpions. The defensive back stopped and cut back to the left, where he went untouched for the final 55 yards of his kickoff return.
The lead grew to 16-7 when the Scorpions elected to take a safety instead of punting from their own end zone.
A dominant 31-point second quarter featured four touchdowns in a span of two and a half minutes. The first was a 16-yard pass from Boring to Desyn Durand with 10:38 on the clock.
Graham McNeely recovered a muffed snap on a punt and returned it 4 yards for a TD with 8:58 until halftime. Following another fumble recovery, Boring threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Micah Hunter with 8:08 left in the quarter.
Five seconds later, McNeely again scooped up a fumble and returned it for a score.
Hoggard also got TD runs from Judah Gillespie (3 yards), Mally Hansley (49 yards), and Jason Arciola (1 yard).
The Vikings finished with 304 total yards (178 rushing and 126 passing), while the Scorpions managed only 97 (93 passing and 4 rushing).
No. 2 Ashley 33, No. 6 West Brunswick 6
Senior quarterback Raleigh Sutton had a passing and a rushing touchdown to help the Screaming Eagles increase their winning streak to four games.
Ashley (6-3, 4-1 Carolina Coast) is guaranteed to finish above .500 for just the fourth time in the 25-year history of the program.
Sutton’s pop pass to Jahmeer Damon went for a 6-yard TD to open the scoring. Ashley (6-3, 4-1 Carolina Coast) also got a 33-yard touchdown pass from Karter Krowl to Josiah Isom and a 1-yard run from Michael Miller Jr. to take a 19-0 lead into the locker room.
Sutton found the end zone on a 5-yard run in the third quarter to make it 26-0. Just over a minute later, a blocked punt by Semaj Green was picked up by Jensen Anders and returned 10 yards for a touchdown.
West Brunswick (2-8, 1-5) avoided the shutout by getting an 18-yard run from quarterback Josiah Borton with 15 seconds to play in the third quarter.
The Screaming Eagles can earn a share of the conference title with a win at Hoggard next week. It would be the first in program history, as Ashley is 0-26 all-time against its county rival.
