The Screaming Eagles finished off an unbeaten regular season by rallying late to capture the first-ever conference tournament title.
Sophomore quarterback Caroline Smist scored on an 11-yard run with four minutes to play to tie the score. She then found a wide-open Elin Bentley in the back of the end zone for the crucial one-point conversion that gave Ashley (14-0) the lead for good.

Smist went 20 of 31 for 225 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown pass to Mariah Brown on the opening possession of the game.
Wide receiver Chloe Laverty had a big night by finishing with nine catches for 80 yards.
Hoggard (7-5) crossed midfield on its final possession following back-to-back long passes from Ellie Gillespie to Harper Menius (16 yards) and Bethany Bowen (21).
A holding penalty and sack pushed the ball back and forced the Vikings to try and pick up 27 yards on their final three plays. Each of them resulted in an incomplete pass.
The Screaming Eagles picked up a first down on an 8-yard run from Brown to seal the victory.
Gillespie was 18 of 35 for 279 yards. All of her completions went to either Bowen (6-119), Menius (5-99), or Reagan Jones (7-61).
A 39-yard touchdown pass from Gillespie to Menius late in the first half got the Vikings on the board. The conversion run failed, so they trailed 7-6 at halftime.
Hoggard took a 13-7 lead with 46.4 seconds remaining in the third quarter. On fourth-and-goal from the 3-yard line, Gillespie connected with Bowen. A conversion run from Dot Shapiro was successful.
A turnover on downs near midfield gave the ball back to the Vikings with 10:34 to play, but they went 3-and-out.
Ashley’s game-winning drive went for 66 yards on eight plays.
Both teams picked up wins earlier in the night to reach the championship game.
The Screaming Eagles prevailed by a score of 40-20 against No. 5 New Hanover, while Hoggard scored 18 unanswered points in an 18-7 win over No. 3 Laney.
