BOYS SOCCER
No. 3 Laney 2, No. 2 New Hanover 1
The Buccaneers picked up their first victory at Legion Stadium since September 15, 2015 by scoring a pair of goals early in the second half.
Henry Tidey buried a free kick from just outside the box in the 42nd minute.
Laney (13-2-1, 3-1-1 Carolina Coast) doubled its lead in the 47th minute when a free kick from Landon Reece couldn’t be corralled by keeper Andy McIntosh. The ball fell to the feet of Bishop Babcock-Giles, who easily found the back of the net.
An own goal got New Hanover (10-3, 3-2) on the board in the 65th minute.
The Buccaneers got a combined eight saves from goalkeepers Sam Walters (seven) and Francisco Arevalo Pineda (one).
Both teams play on the road Tuesday at 6 p.m. Laney visits West Brunswick, while New Hanover travels to North Brunswick.
No. 6 Cape Fear Academy 1, John Paul II 1 (CFA wins 4-1 in penalty kicks)
Goalkeeper Will Kaplan made five saves, including a pair in penalty kicks, to help the Hurricanes avenge an earlier-season loss.
John Paul II entered the match with a 17-0-1 record.
CFA (10-5-1, 6-1 CPIC) opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Vance Mino scored off an assist from Luke Desmond. The visitors found the equalizer 11 minutes later on a penalty kick.
The match remained tied throughout regulation and overtime. Curren Gaskill, Trey Ragan, Rowan Forkin and Jace Williams all converted their penalty kicks.
Next up is a home match against Davidson Day on Saturday at 10 a.m.
No. 7 Coastal Christian 4, Wayne Christian 0
Jackson Baker and Sean Cazeault both had one goal and one assist in the road win.
Coastal Christian (12-5, 5-2 CPIC) also got one goal apiece from Connor Lampman and Levi Tamson.
Tanner Getz handed out the other assist. Goalkeeper Will Santaniello earned the clean sheet by saving all four shots he faced.
The Centurions welcome Davidson Day at 4 p.m. Friday.
No. 4 Ashley 4, No. 8 West Brunswick 0
The Screaming Eagles secured their second shutout in as many days.
Junior Garcia scored twice, while Bodey Porter and Iain Smith each had one goal. The assists came from Cameron Berry, Jacob Macias and Luke Tierney.
Ashley (9-2-3, 3-1-1) goalkeepers John Mostard (55 minutes) and Matt Loughnane (25 minutes) shared the clean sheet.
A home match against Topsail on Tuesday night at 6 awaits the Screaming Eagles. West Brunswick (7-6, 1-5) hosts Laney at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
No. 1 Hoggard 5, No. 11 North Brunswick 0
Despite missing several starters to injury, the Vikings were able to increase their winning streak to double digits.
Ari Tanner put home a pair of goals. Fellow juniors James Mclean and Jace Tucker as well as senior Adler Sauer also scored.
Hawke Foster handed out two assists. The others came from Ayoub Abdelhamid, Sawyer Ingham and Landon Kamaris.
Hoggard (12-1-1, 5-0 Carolina Coast) goalkeeper William Nichols earned the clean sheet.
The Vikings play at Ashley on Thursday at 6 p.m. North Brunswick (7-9-1, 0-5) will look to bounce back when it welcomes New Hanover for a 6 p.m. match on Tuesday.
No. 12 Trask 2, South Lenoir 0
First-half goals from freshman Andrew Rollings lifted the Titans to a road victory.
Trask (3-7-2, 1-1 East Central) got a stellar performance from goalkeeper Peter Sandoval.
Next up is a match at SW Onslow on Monday at 6 p.m.
VOLLEYBALL
No. 3 Ashley 3, No. 12 New Hanover 0
25-19, 25-20, 25-16
The victorious Screaming Eagles served 10 aces, including a match-high four from Abby Tolhurst.
Jessie Hill hit .409 with 11 kills, while Marley Burk hit .600 with seven kills. Addyson Barberich and Madison Dameron both had seven digs.
Ashley (13-8, 6-4 Carolina Coast) setter Sarah Brannin finished with 27 assists and five digs.
New Hanover (5-14, 2-8) got nine assists, seven kills, seven digs and three blocks from Maille Smith. Libero Justine McCague came up with 15 digs.
The Screaming Eagles welcome South Brunswick at 6 p.m. Monday. The Wildcats will look to bounce back when they play at Laney on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Norah Davis hit .423 with 16 kills and 10 aces in a home win that gave the Vikings at least a share of the Carolina Coast Conference title.
Hoggard (19-3, 10-0) can win it outright by beating either of its final two opponents – North Brunswick (Tuesday) or Ashley (Thursday). Middle Payton Jones added eight kills.
Laney (6-11, 5-5) welcomes New Hanover at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
No. 2 Topsail 3, No. 13 West Brunswick 0

The Pirates rolled to a home sweep for the second night in a row behind a strong performance from senior Anna Pullinger, who hit .692 with 10 kills and three aces.
Topsail (13-5, 9-2 Carolina Coast) got 13 kills and eight digs from Sarah Cutler. Hannah Gates handed out 25 assists to go along with five digs.
Both teams play at home on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Pirates host Wilmington Christian Academy, while West Brunswick (4-14, 1-10) welcomes Ashley.
No. 4 Coastal Christian 3, Wayne Christian 1
Setter Baylor Everette had another big night with 42 assists and a pair of aces.
Leighton Grant had a double-double with 13 kills, 13 digs and five aces. Randal Bork added 10 kills and two blocks, while Chloe Carter finished with seven kills and four blocks.
Coastal Christian (13-10, 4-1 CPIC) also got 29 digs from Pacey Hodges.
The Centurions welcome Davidson Day for a 5 p.m. match on Friday.

Bertie Brookes recorded a double-double with 19 assists and 19 digs in the dominant home win.
Brookes also hit .600 with six kills. Frankie Osborne put down a match-high 11 kills, while Edie Brooke Bartlett finished with seven kills, eight digs and four aces.
CFA (11-3, 4-2 CPIC) libero Mary Ryan Campbell came up with 21 digs. Lila Hammer handed out 20 assists.
A home match against Davidson Day at 10 a.m. Saturday is next on the schedule.

Jensen Bordeaux finished with 21 digs, nine kills and four aces for the Patriots, who snapped a seven-match losing streak.
Pender (5-13, 1-6 East Central) also got 10 digs and five kills from Charleigh Rivenbark as well as 18 digs and four kills from Eden Gurganous.
Ryley Bradshaw handed out 11 assists and came up with eight digs, while fellow setter Malorie Hardison had nine assists, eight digs and two kills.
The Patriots play a home nonconference match against North Brunswick on Monday night at 6.

For the first time this season, Laney’s George Adams crossed the finish line first.
Adams was the only participant to finish in less than 17 minutes. His time of 16:57.83 was nearly eight seconds better than New Hanover’s Michael Enriquez (17:05.74).
Those two ran away from the rest of the field. Hoggard’s Thomas Futch (18:03.99), West Brunswick’s Bryson Hollis (18:08.04) and Ashley’s Colten Wescoe (18:11.45) rounded out the top five.

Emma Rogers of New Hanover edged out fellow sophomore Lexi George of Ashley.
Rogers had a time of 20:01.47, while George crossed the finish line in 20:06.00.
The Screaming Eagles had four of the top six runners to earn a 14-point victory over Hoggard. Hayley Ervin (third in 20:41.68), Sadie Bass (fifth in 20:50.14) and Alison Gaston (sixth in 20:53.92) had strong performances.
Hoggard got a fourth-place finish from Sarah Phillips (20:44.23).

Hoggard remained unbeaten through six matches by placing three golfers in the top 10.
Freshman Elliott Walters led the way with a 40. Maddie Cox shot 44, while Guerlain Gilbert carded a 49.
Susan Davis of New Hanover earned medalist honors for the fifth time. Her 3-over 38 was two strokes better than Walters and Laney’s Allie Casey.

For the third time this week, the Vikings won all nine courts to complete a perfect regular season.
Hoggard (17-0, 12-0 Carolina Coast) dropped only four games in singles. Braelyn Roberson (No. 1) and Zoe Ten Brink (No. 3) each won 6-0, 6-0.
Zannah Roberson (6-0, 6-1 at No. 2), Kate Bennington (6-0, 6-1 at No. 4), Kenzie Le (6-0, 6-1 at No. 5) and Allie Sauer (6-1, 6-0 at No. 6) secured the other four points.
Laney fell to 8-4 both overall and in conference play.
Both teams will find out their seed for the 8A playoffs when the brackets are released on October 10.
Topsail 7, West Brunswick 2
Cina Huston cruised by a score of 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, while Cayden Persichetti (No. 1), Reed Garofano (No. 2) and Avery Graham (No. 3) all dropped only one game for the victorious Pirates.
Topsail (7-6, 6-6 Carolina Coast) swept doubles – Persichetti/Garofano (8-0 at No. 1), Huston/Graham (8-1 at No. 2) and Olivia Barras/Lane Schott (8-5 at No. 3).
Bailey Lamonica (6-1, 6-0 at No. 5) and Olivia Reme (5-7, 6-1, ret.) picked up West Brunswick’s (0-13, 0-12) points.
New Hanover 7, Ashley 2
The Wildcats lost only five games in singles.
Elizabeth Sifly (No. 1), Virginia Breeden (No. 2) and Lila Brown (No. 5) had 6-0, 6-0 victories.
Laynie Fortun (6-1, 6-0 at No. 3), Maggie Hooks (6-2, 6-0 at No. 4) and Emma Bodemann (6-2, 6-0 at No. 6) also prevailed.
New Hanover’s (14-5, 10-2 Carolina Coast) final point came thanks to a 9-8(4) win at No. 1 doubles from Corrina Basta and Elizabeth Lewis.
Ashley (5-10, 3-8) got doubles victories from Kyla Bartlett/Kyndall Piner (8-4 at No. 2) and Laughlin Smith/Isabella Toriello (8-6 at No. 3).
The Sceaming Eagles host North Brunswick on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
