COASTAL PREPS THREE STARS OF THE NIGHT

TRACK & FIELD

NCISAA Division II State Championship

A pair of area seniors – Coastal Christian’s Corban Cazier and Cape Fear Academy’s Christian Miller – ended their high school careers with state titles. 

Cazier crossed the finish line first in the 800-meter run (1:57.13), the 1,600 (4:22.50), and the 3,200 (9:22.93). 

He wasn’t challenged in any of his races. The Tampa signee secured two-second wins in the 800 and 1,600, and was victorious by six seconds in the 3,200.

Miller cleared a personal-best 13-6 to win the pole vault title over teammate Jackson Renton (13-0). 

Coastal Christian finished fifth as a team with 64.5 points. Cape Fear Academy was 13th with 20 points. 

The Centurions also got a pair of top-five finishes from thrower Banks Downing. He was third in the discus with a distance of 139-3 and fifth in the shot put with a throw of 43-5. 

Distance runner Grayson Brazik was third in the 3,200 (9:31.87) and seventh in the 1,600 (4:31.06).

Brazik, Cazier, Nykko Kraemer, and Cole Williamson finished third in the 4×800 relay with a time of 8:24.60. 

Eli Salvant cleared 11-6 in the pole vault to place fourth, while Kale Sturtz tied for fifth with a height of 11-0. 

Sam Bush was ninth in the discus (114-4) and 10th in the shot put (40-11). Sam Hackney placed eighth in the shot put (41-3.5). 

Hurdler Josiah Rennie finished eighth in the 110 meter (17.10) and 10th in 300 (44.14). 

Coastal Christian’s other top individual performances from Dylan Schmick (10th in the triple jump), Mason Pound (11th in the 300 hurdles), Owen Arnette (12th in the high jump), Kraemer (14th in the 800), and Raphael Almeida (15th in the triple jump). 

The three other relay teams also competed – 4×200 (ninth), 4×100 (10th), and 4×400 (13th). 

Cape Fear Academy’s 4×400 relay team placed seventh in 3:39.31. The 4×100 team was 11th. 

In addition to finishing as the runner-up in pole vault, Renton was 10th in the high jump (5-6). Owen Holt was 13th in the 800. 

In girls action, Cape Fear Academy scored 43 points to finish in seventh place. They were followed by Coastal Christian with 34.5 points. 

Emma Gibbs led the way for the Hurricanes with second-place performances in the 800 (2:19.99) and 3,200 (11:21.53). 

Kylie Petrides was third in the 1,600 (5:14.62) and seventh in the 800 (2:26.56), while Vivian Luckman was seventh in the 1,600 (5:22.50) and eighth in the 800 (2:26.80). 

Sophomore Lexie Carpenter showed off her versatility with three top-10 individual finishes. She was third in the high jump (4-8), fourth in the pole vault (6-0), and 10th in the long jump (14-3.75). 

CFA got ninth-place finishes from Jessica Carpenter in the discus (78-7) and Sienna Harrington in the 300 hurdles (52.61).

The other top-15 finishes came from Julia Goggin (11th in the 100 hurdles and 13th in the 300 hurdles), Megan Skeete (15th in the 400), and Maura Stickle (15th in the 800) 

Three relay teams – 4×400 (fourth), 4×200 (11th), and 4×100 (13th) – fared well. The 4×800 relay team had the fastest time, but was disqualified. 

Coastal Christian’s Sydney Whitfield finished second in the pole vault (7-0), fourth in the triple jump (32-10), and seventh in the long jump (14-9.5). 

Kiara Haasbroek was fifth in both the high jump (4-6) and triple jump (32-10), while Caitlyn Byrd was fifth in the pole vault (6-0). 

Sydney Lampman placed fourth in the high jump (4-8), ninth in the 100 hurdles (18.83) and 13th in the long jump (14-0.50). 

Mattie Tanner’s distance of 32-3 in the triple jump earned her sixth place. 

The other top-15 finishers were Mattie Tanner (12th in the long jump), Abigail Hermann (13th in the triple jump), and Holland Hunter (14th in the discus).  

Both the 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams were 10th. 

NCHSAA 8A State Championship

Hoggard junior Riley Kiziah won the state title in the 1,600-meter run and later placed fifth in the 3,200. 

Kiziah’s time of 4:26.74 in the 1,600 narrowly edged Broughton’s Cam Kuss (4:26.92). He became the program’s fifth individual state champion, but first on the track. Discus thrower Anthony Greer was the last champ back in 2002. 

The Vikings had two other top-10 finishers in the event. Gabe Archibald placed sixth with a time of 4:31.90. He was followed by Joel Aiken in 4:32.03. 

Kiziah crossed the finish line in the 3,200 in 9:27.74. 

Jace Tucker was eighth in the 100 (11.21) and 12th in the 200 (22.78). Pole vaulter Ben Hulls placed ninth by clearing 12-0 in his final meet. 

Hoggard had three relay teams compete – 4×100 (12th), 4×200 (14th), and 4×800 (14th). 

The only other area boys competitor was Laney’s Joaquin Soto, who finished 13th in the 110-meter hurdles. 

On the girls side, Hoggard’s Mia Medlin was the runner-up in the 3,200 after crossing the finish line in 11:02.08. 

Abella Exantus had a strong day by finishing third in the long jump (17-9) and seventh in the high jump (4-10). 

Bethany Bowen cleared 8-0 in the pole vault to place 10th, while thrower AK Chance was 13th in both the discus and the shot put. 

The Vikings’ 4×800 relay team was 12th.

Laney’s top performances came from hurdler Saydee Harper. She was fifth in the 300 meters (45.15) and ninth in the 100 (15.84). 

Qamarah McKoy’s long jump distance of 16-5.5 was good enough for 10th. Braidyn Keegan finished 12th in the 300 hurdles, while the 4×800 relay team placed 15th. 

NCHSAA 6A State Championship

The only area competitor was West Brunswick sophomore Luke Helms, who finished 13th in the shot put with a throw of 43-3.25.

NCISAA 3A State Championship

The Hurricanes couldn’t pull off the upset, coming up short against the talented Patriots in the state championship match for the second year in a row. 

Seniors Owen Watkins and Jaxon Rogers fought hard in an 8-4 loss at No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 team of Deniz Erdem and Jace Williams fell by a score of 8-3. 

Davidson Day (9-1) clinched the title with straight-set wins at No. 1 and 5 singles. 

CFA (15-3) was in the state championship match for the seventh consecutive postseason. In addition to Rogers and Watkins, the team will graduate three other seniors – Cormac Carney, Brian Huang, and Williams.
