GIRLS BASKETBALL
No. 2 Cape Fear Academy 67, Rocky Mount Academy 50
CPIC Tournament Championship
A remarkable 46-point performance from senior guard Milly Kelley lifted the Hurricanes to the tournament title against the defending NCISAA 2A state champions.
Kelley made 18 of her 26 shots, including going 7 of 14 from 3-point range.
CFA (22-2) also got 10 points from Emma Gibbs as well 11 rebounds from Addie Fikry.
The Hurricanes will find out their seed for the NCISAA 3A playoffs when the brackets are released this weekend.
No. 6 New Hanover 50, No. 3 Topsail 38
The Wildcats were able to avenge an earlier-season loss and even their record in Carolina Conference play behind a strong defense effort.
A pair of seniors led New Hanover (12-10, 6-6) offensively. Maleah Moses Braxton finished with 18 points, while Jazziyah Smith added 16.
Both teams have first round games in the CCC Tournament on Monday. The Wildcats square off against Ashley at 7:30 p.m, while Topsail (15-8, 8-4) plays North Brunswick at 4:30 p.m.
No. 1 Hoggard 66, No. 5 Ashley 29
It was business as usual for the Vikings, who finished unbeaten in conference play for the fifth consecutive season.
Avery Fitzgerald recorded a double-double by scoring 14 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Fellow senior Tristan Shivers poured in a game-high 22 points to go along with eight assists and five steals.
Hoggard (23-1, 12-0 Carolina Coast) shot 63 percent (25 of 40) from inside the arc and finished 13 of 17 from the free throw line.
Airlie Altman continued her strong play with 14 points and nine rebounds.
The Vikings take on the winner of Ashley/New Hanover in the CCC Tournament semifinals on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Ashley (14-10, 6-6) plays New Hanover at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the first round.
No. 4 Laney 68, No. 13 North Brunswick 27
The victorious Buccaneers connected on six 3-pointers, including three from Sofia Clayton.
Clayton finished with 13 points, while Katelyn Lucera poured in a game-high 18. Laney (15-8, 8-4 Carolina Coast) standout freshman Julia Pepper scored all 12 of her points in the first half.
North Brunswick (0-20, 0-12) was paced by Adrianna Gomez, who scored nine points.
The Buccaneers play West Brunswick on Monday at 6 p.m. in the first round of the conference tournament. The Scorpions face Topsail at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
No. 10 Trask 40, SW Onslow 36
A double-double of 15 points and 16 rebounds from junior Carley Davis lifted the Titans to a win in their regular-season finale.
Trask (10-12, 5-5 East Central) came up with 16 steals, including eight from Alanah Watkins. She also scored seven points.
Sophia Gough finished with nine points and eight rebounds, while Arianna Burnett grabbed nine rebounds.
Next up for the Titans is a home game against Pender on Monday at 6 p.m. in the first round of the conference tournament.
No. 7 South Brunswick 42, West Bladen 13
The Cougars scored 37 points in the first half before putting things in cruise control for the final 16 minutes.
For the second straight game, Adyson Bell led the way with 13 points. Fellow guard Meryn Deutsch scored 10 points.
South Brunswick (16-2, 9-1 Southeastern) also got six points apiece from Aubree Adams and Gracin Johnson. The Cougars will compete in the SEC Tournament next week.
No. 8 Wilmington Christian Academy 67, Southside Christian 1
First round NCCSA 2A playoffs
For the fifth time this season, the Patriots held their opponent to less than 10 points.
WCA (20-5) led 24-0 after eight minutes and 44-0 at halftime. Southside Christian’s lone point came in the third quarter.
Seven of the 10 players who suited up scored, led by 14 points from Mallory Deutsch and Ava Gray. Lauren Steinhauer had 12 points, while Brooke Coptsias added nine.
No. 9 Southeastern Christian Academy 54, Dillon Christian (S.C.) 18
Ella Lynch scored 15 of her game-high 17 points in the first quarter, and the Warriors concluded the regular season with a lopsided win.
SCA (15-5) exploded for 26 points in the first quarter to build a 21-point advantage.
Angelina Lauver had 10 points, while Ella Gregory chipped in seven.
The Warriors will find out their NCISAA 1A playoff seed this weekend once the brackets are released.
BOYS BASKETBALL
No. 9 Trask 73, SW Onslow 70
Three free throws with 0.4 seconds remaining gave the Titans a win in one of the wildest games of the season.
Trask (14-8, 6-4 East Central) led 70-67 with less than a minute to play. SW Onslow came up with a steal, but missed a layup with 27 seconds remaining.
Mathias Sonne grabbed the defensive rebound and was fouled. Unfortunately, he missed both free throw attempts. That set up a crazy finish.
SW Onslow called timeout at midcourt with 15.2 seconds on the clock. A game-tying 3-pointer from Carlos Pagan swished through the net with six seconds left.
The Titans quickly inbounded the ball to Trey Paffenroth, who was fouled attempting a shot from halfcourt with just 0.4 seconds to play.
Frustrated by the call, Pagan slammed the ball and was issued a technical foul. Paffenroth made one of his three attempts from the foul line before Sonne drilled both free throws that were awarded for the technical foul.
Gio Driggers led Trask with 22 points and nine rebounds. Faqueeh Harmon added 15 points, while Sonne chipped in 13.
Trask will play at home in the first round of the ECC Tournament against an opponent to be announced at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
No. 10 South Brunswick 69, West Bladen 66
Jayden Daniels and Edward Young combined for 42 points, and the Cougars held on for an impressive road victory.
West Bladen entered the game on an 11-game winning streak.
Daniels scored 15 of his team-high 22 points in the second half. Young added 20 points, while Jayden Rossi finished with 12. The duo combined to score 14 of South Brunswick’s (15-7, 7-3 Southeastern) 17 points in the fourth quarter.
The Cougars led 33-27 at halftime and 52-50 after three quarters.
Next up will be a semifinal game in the SEC Tournament next week against an opponent to be determined.
No. 1 Hoggard 78, No. 12 Ashley 45
The Vikings claimed their first outright conference title since 2019 thanks to strong performances from four seniors, who combined for 51 points.
Will Seward led the way with 18 points, while Mercer Godier followed closely behind with a career-high 17. Hoggard (19-5, 11-1 Carolina Coast) also got eight points apiece from Lukas Batchelor and Markell Murphy.
For the second time in three days, the Vikings built a commanding lead after eight minutes. The 29-6 advantage grew to 51-20 at halftime.
Hoggard will take on the winner of North Brunswick/West Brunswick in the semifinals of the CCC Tournament on Thursday at 6 p.m. Ashley (5-19, 1-11) meets New Hanover at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the first round.
No. 3 Laney 71, No. 4 North Brunswick 53
After falling behind 17-12 after the opening eight minutes, the Buccaneers outscored the Scorpions 40-18 in the middle two quarters to build an insurmountable lead.
Junior guard Kareem Anderson filled the stat sheet by finishing with 19 points, seven assists, four rebounds, and three assists.
Montana Davis added 18 points, six assists, four steals, and three rebounds. Laney (15-9, 8-4 Carolina Coast) also got a strong performance from Colin Lamb, who had 14 points, four rebounds, and three assists.
North Brunswick’s (16-8, 6-6) Jack Baker scored a game-high 23 points. Joining him in double figures were Kane Jenrette (14) and MJ Smith (11).
Both teams will compete in the first round of the CCC Tournament on Tuesday. The Buccaneers take on Topsail at 6 p.m., while the Scorpions play rival West Brunswick at 7:30 p.m.
No. 2 New Hanover 60, No. 11 Topsail 21
Unlike the previous two home games this week, the Wildcats didn’t need to rally late.
New Hanover (17-6, 10-2 Carolina Coast) led 18-2 after one quarter and 40-6 at halftime. Almost the entirety of the second half was played with a running clock.
Kellum Brown led a balanced offensive attack with 18 points, including 12 in the first half. Quin’sier Waddell added 14 points, and fellow senior Ny’Zion Ballard scored 12.
Topsail (5-19, 1-11) got six points from Carter Barras and Logan Carano.
The Wildcats met Ashley at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the first round of the CCC Tournament. Topsail follows at 6 p.m. against Laney.
No. 7 Southeastern Christian Academy 68, Dillon Christian (S.C.) 45
The Warriors ended their regular season in solid fashion by getting scoring contributions from nine players.
Uzziah Marlowe made four of SCA’s (18-3) seven 3-pointers en route to his game-high 19 points. Grady Price scored 12 points, while Ziyon Smith finished with nine.
The Warriors will find out their seed for the NCISAA 1A playoffs when the brackets are released this weekend.
No. 8 Wilmington Christian Academy 92, Southside Christian 19
First round NCCSA 2A playoffs
Five players reached double figures for the Patriots, whose quest for a state title began with a lopsided home win.
WCA (20-5) shot an impressive 62 percent from the field (38 of 61) and came away with 16 steals.
Parker Goodlow scored 18 points to go along with six rebounds. Kingston Rupert added 16 points and five steals.
Parker Brown made all six of his shot attempts and both free throws for 12 points. Parker Fillyaw finished with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Maddoux Batts had 10 points and five rebounds.
BOYS WRESTLING
7A East Regional
Eleven area competitors from four schools advanced to the semifinals after the first day of action.
Topsail leads the way with four. Jacob Pope (120 pounds) and Donovan Gunn (144) both recorded two pins. Jake Amiott rolled to a pair of tech falls at 138 (19-3 and 19-4), while Ben McCaleb had a pin and 4-2 decision at 175.
Ashley teammates Lucas Angstadt (120) and Elijah Allinen (138) pinned both of their opponents.
New Hanover’s Matthew Carter (113) and Chris Braxton (126) kept their title hopes alive. Carter had a pin and 16-0 tech fall, while Braxton pinned his only opponent in 1:30.
Three North Brunswick participants went unbeaten. Kirick Gurkin (165) recorded two pins. Tyler Fleckinger (120) earned a 13-0 major decision and then had a first-period pin. Both of Sebastian Hernandez’s wins came by decision (13-11 and 11-4).
All four schools have wrestlers still alive in the consolation bracket. The top four finishers at each weight class will advance to the state championship.
6A East Regional
West Brunswick’s Tristan Winburn, Josh Connick, and Liam Keane secured victories that advanced them to Saturday’s semifinals.
Winburn only had one match at 120 pounds, recording a pin in 5:03. Connick rolled to a pair of tech falls at 150 (17-2 and 18-2), while Keane had a 19-second pin and a 7-3 decision at 215.
Six other Trojans are still alive in consolation bracket.
5A East Regional
South Brunswick teammates Gabriel Arce and Elijah Watts moved closer to earning a spot at next week’s state championship by winning a pair of matches.
Both will compete in the semifinals on Saturday. Watts finished with a pin and 10-3 decision at 132 pounds, while Arce cruised to a 15-0 tech fall and followed that up with a pin in 1:22 at 165.
The Cougars have four other wrestlers alive in the consolation bracket hoping to battle back and reach the third-place bout.
3A East Regional
Pender’s Andrew Robinson (215 pounds) and Trask’s Pedro Sandoval Perez (175) each recorded a pair of pins.
Trask’s other semifinalist is Cody Roper, who had an 18-0 tech fall in his lone bout at 150.
GIRLS SWIMMING & DIVING
NCHSAA 5A State Championship

NCHSAA 6A State Championship
West Brunswick’s Tess Caron, Kaylee Jarvis, Blakely McMullan, and Ava Williams fared well in a pair of relays to help the Trojans score 31 points and finish in 17th place.
The team placed 10th in the 200 freestyle relay (1:50.08) and 11th in the 200 medley relay (2:03.49).
Powerhouse Charlotte Catholic easily won the team title with 394 points.
Ava Williams had West Brunswick’s lone top-15 individual finish. Her time of 2:27.80 in the 200 IM was good enough for 12th.

NCHSAA 8A State Championship
Laney senior Kathryn Joy concluded her first season as a diver with a seventh-place finish. The talented gymnast finished with a score of 328.20.
Alis Yadushlivy of Apex Friendship scored 372.90 to claim the title.
Hoggard got a 16th-place finish from Katie Coble (236.50).
