GIRLS SWIMMING

Ashley 154, South Brunswick 135, West Brunswick 113, North Brunswick 24

at Brunswick Community College

The Screaming Eagles finished first in all three relays and got a pair of individual wins from Violet Derry and Sophia Wert to defeat South Brunswick by 19 points. 

Derry’s victories came in the 200 IM (2:22.19) and 100 freestyle (57.76). Wert won the 50 freestyle (25.67) and 100 breaststroke (1:13.96). 

Derry, Wert, Mackenzie Carroll and Brynn Miles opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:57.81.

Derry, Miles, Wert and Samone Vermeulen captured the 200 freestyle relay (1:44.92). Carroll, Vermeulen, Kyla Bartlett and Lilah Taylor completed the relay sweep by finishing the 400 freestyle in 4:16.44.

West Brunswick standout freestyle distance swimmer Kaylee Jarvis was victorious in the 200 (2:13.51) and 500 (6:10.20). 

South Brunswick got first-place finishes from Kennedy Gordon in the 100 butterfly (1:10.50) and Peyton Stegman in the 100 backstroke (1:04.41).

at Brunswick Community College

Ryker Eder, Bryson Edwards and Stephen Butner were victorious in all four events to help the Screaming Eagles secure the meet win. 

Elijah Setzer joined them on the 200 medley relay (1:42.89) and 200 freestyle relay (1:34.70).

Eder’s individual wins came in the 200 freestyle (1:50.09) and 100 breaststroke (1:04.71). Edwards touched the wall first in the 200 IM (2:01.43) and 100 butterfly (44.48). 

Butner had victories in the 50 freestyle (22.77) and 100 backstroke (56.46). Ashley’s other first-place finish came in the 100 freestyle from John Paul Summers, who had a time of 56.75.

South Brunswick standout freshman Michael Best captured the 500 freestyle in 5:03.25. Best, Peyton Adkisson, Oliver Boehmer and Evan Sevast won the meet-ending 400 freestyle relay (3:35.42).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

No. 8 Cape Fear Academy 61, No. 9 West Brunswick 26

Milly Kelley and Emma Gibbs combined for 47 points, and the Hurricanes picked up their first victory in the series since 2015. 

Kelley led all players with 26 points, while Gibbs chipped in 21. CFA (7-1) also got 10 rebounds from Addie Fikry.

Next up for the Hurricanes is a home game against Atlantic Collegiate Academy (S.C.) on Friday at 6 p.m. West Brunswick (2-3) will look to bounce back when it visits Whiteville at 6 p.m. Friday. 

No. 2 Laney 71, No. 14 Pender 9

Freshman Julia Pepper scored 16 of her career-high 18 points in the opening half as the Buccaneers cruised on their home court.

Laney (3-1) held a 32-5 advantage after the first quarter. It was 53-5 at halftime, so the entire second half was played with a running clock.

Nine of the 12 players who suited up reached the scoring column. Sofia Clayton added 12 points. Brooklyn King finished with 10 points, while Katelyn Lucera scored nine.  

The Buccaneers host Swansboro at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Pender (0-3) welcomes Wallace-Rose Hill on Friday at 6 p.m.

No. 11 Southeastern Christian Academy 47, Liberty Christian Academy 11

The Warriors led 21-2 after the first quarter and extended it to 33-6 at halftime. 

Angelina Lauver led a balanced offensive attack with 14 points. Ella Gregory added 10 points, and Liz Dickerson scored nine. 

SCA (3-2) hosts Liberty Christian Academy on Thursday night at 5:30.

BOYS BASKETBALL

No. 4 West Brunswick 43, No. 9 Cape Fear Academy 38

The Trojans ended the game on a 17-0 run to pull off an incredible home victory. 

West Brunswick (4-1) trailed 38-26 less than a minute into the fourth quarter following a 3-pointer from CFA’s (4-5) Elijah Fajardo.

Matthew McKenney’s 3-pointer from the right corner with 1:23 remaining to cut the deficit to 38-37. The senior guard then stole an inbounds pass on the ensuing possession, which led to a layup from K’Veon Griffin. It was the Trojans’ first lead of the game.

The Hurricanes again turned the ball over on a 5-second violation. With 20 seconds left, McKenney got free under the basket for a layup to increase the advantage to 41-38.

Once again, CFA was unable to get off a shot. A pass into the post was deflected by Isaac Clarida and hauled in by Jerrison Dixon, who sank a pair of free throws with 3.6 seconds on the clock. 

Griffin finished with eight points, seven assists and six rebounds. Dixon had seven points and seven rebounds, while Clarida chipped in six points and nine rebounds. Jonathan Daniels scored a team-best 11 points. 

Both teams will be back in action Friday. The Trojans visit Whiteville at 7:30 p.m., while the Hurricanes meet Cresset Christian Academy at 5 p.m. It will be part of the 919 Phenom Showcase at North Pitt.

No. 3 Laney 67, No. 14 Pender 28

Twelve players scored for the Buccaneers, who jumped out to a 25-8 lead after eight minutes. 

Colin Lamb scored a game-high 16 points to go along with five steals and four assists. Laney (3-0) also got 15 points and four steals from Kareem Anderson as well as 10 points from Whit Lamb.

Ricky Armstrong led Pender (0-2) with seven points. 

The Buccaneers take on Cardinal Gibbons at 4 p.m. Friday at Brogden Hall in the Leon Brogden Hoopfest. Next up for the Patriots is a home game against Wallace-Rose Hill on Friday at 7:30 p.m. 

No. 10 Southeastern Christian Academy 73, Liberty Christian Academy 59

Six-foot-seven junior forward Ziyon Smith poured in 20 points, and the Warriors pulled away in the second half. 

SCA (4-1) connected on seven 3-pointers. Grady Price added 16 points, while Uzziah Marlowe scored 14. The Warriors’ 30-28 halftime lead grew to 49-41 after three quarters. 

A home game against New Garden Friends at 1 p.m. Saturday is next on the schedule. 

Miller School (Va.) 73, No. 2 Hoggard 55

Good Guys vs. Cancer at First Flight

Hunter McGrath scored 17 points, but the Vikings couldn’t overcome a 47-30 halftime deficit. 

Two other Hoggard (2-2) players reached double figures – Mercer Godier (12) and Porter Morgan (10).

The Vikings will be back in Kill Devil Hills for a game against Millbrook on Saturday at 11 a.m.
