For the first time in more than a decade, the Pirates defeated their rival.

It also likely snapped Laney’s seven-year conference championship run, although both teams still have five matches remaining on their schedule.

“It’s great, but this was just another dual,” Topsail coach Jack Darling said. “We’re onto the next match at the end of the day. That’s our mentality.”

Topsail (2-0, 2-0 Carolina Coast) couldn’t have scripted a better start. The first seven bouts were bonus-point wins, giving the visitors a nearly insurmountable 40-0 lead.

Heavyweight Josh Hays ended the night in style by recording a pin in 13 seconds.

Ryan Teribury set the tone at 106 pounds with a pin in 1:33. Mark Gonzales followed and built a 7-0 lead after the first period before getting a fall in 2:20.

Quinn Smith (3:30 at 120) and Jacob Pope (1:05 at 126) followed with pins of their own to increase the lead to 24-0. Noah Reid kept the bonus point streak alive by getting a takedown with 20 seconds left to secure a 10-1 major decision at 132.

Jake Amiott led 14-0 before recording a pin in 3:40 at 138. Noah Blevins completed the incredible run with a pin in 1:37 at 144.

“Those guys were just doing their job,” Darling said. “We preach in the practice room that we need to wrestle hard regardless of what the team score is.”

Laney (9-3, 1-1) finally got on the board with a 13-5 major decision at 150. The Buccaneers needed pins in the final six bouts to tie the score and force the outcome to be decided by criteria.

It looked as if there would be very little drama when Topsail’s Sebastian Lempicki built a 15-4 lead over Abram Stoebig at 157. Stoebig continued to battle and eventually put Lempicki on his back. The pin came as the buzzer sounded to end the second period.

Vincent Valentino (3:50 at 165) and Mac Kopelman (1:02 at 175) followed with falls of their own.

The Pirates finally clinched the victory at 190. Brodie Stanton suffered a 13-11 loss to Thomas Gillespie, but he stayed off his back.

Darrell McIntyre completed a 28-0 run for the Buccaneers with a 4-2 decision at 215.

Ashley 39, South Brunswick 35

Both teams finished with seven victories, but the Screaming Eagles held the edge in bonus points to prevail at home.

Only one of Ashley’s (1-2, 1-1 Carolina Coast) wins came by decision. It was the first bout of the night, where Arturo Cuellar won by a score of 19-15 at 175 pounds. He trailed 13-11 after two periods.

The Screaming Eagles got pins from Adian Weilacher (0:35 at 215), Lucas Angstadt (2:33 at 126), Ian Winchell (1:54 at 138), and Carson Lane (4:59 at 150). Grace Vraro (106) and Anabelle Melton (113) received back-to-back forfeits.

All four of South Brunswick’s (2-2, 1-2) pins came in the first period – Christopher Naurocki (1:48 at 285), Max Hunter (1:18 at 120), Elijah Watts (1:03 at 132), and Gabe Arce (1:13 at 165).

Andrew Robinson had a 14-7 decision at 190, Gavin Fragiacomo earned a 10-6 decision at 157, and Tyrus Davis cruised to a 15-2 major decision at 144.

Hoggard 59, New Hanover 24

After falling behind 18-6, the Vikings went on a 53-0 run to win their first match of the season.

The run started with a pin at 144 pounds from Aung Phyo. Hoggard (1-2, 1-1 Carolina Coast) also got pins from Michael Repeta (150), Justus Gunter (175), Elias Markmann-Lange (190), Mason Hocker (285), and Mason Schoen (106).

Lawrence Kai Pagan (120), Alex Walters (157), and Avery Tucker (215) received forfeits. The other five points came from Kenneth Pearson, who had a 15-0 tech fall at 165.
