Trask 74, Union 38
Championship game of the Kenny Bass Christmas Tournament at Hobbton
Eleven players reached the scoring column in a dominant performance that gave the Titans the title.
Junior Anisa Lewis scored 10 of her game-high 24 points in the first quarter to put Trask (5-4) up 20-5. The lead grew to 41-14 at halftime.
Cykira Pickett hit three 3-pointers and finsihed with 15 points, while Leanna Pfeiffer and Yolanda Scarbrough each finished with seven points.
The Titans return to the court on Jan. 3 at 6 p.m. at East Carteret.
Topsail 58, Richlands 35
First round of the Dixon Christmas Classic
A terrific defensive effort that featured 21 steals helped the Pirates open the event with a comfortable win.
Sydney Hartgrove had another double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead the way. The junior also came away with four steals and dished out five assists. Julia Sullivan finished with nine points, eight rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Topsail (8-2), which put the game away by outscoring Richlands 20-5 in the third quarter, also got 10 points and four rebounds from Bella Kross.
The Pirates will face Greene Central in the semifinals on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
South Brunswick 42, West Columbus 16
Semifinals of the East Columbus Holiday Tournament
Nija Bryant scored a game-high 11 points and the Cougars scored 13 points in the first and third quarters to advance to the championship game.
South Brunswick (2-9) led 13-3 after the opening eight minutes and increased it to 33-13 after the big third quarter.
Jo Mann scored seven of her 10 points in the first quarter, while Lexi Collins and Kassidy Lewis each added six points.
The Cougars play host East Columbus for the title at 5 p.m. Saturday.
West Brunswick 50, South Lenoir 39
First round of the Dixon Christmas Classic
The Trojans picked up their second victory of the season thanks to a 31-point second half.
Sophomore Jamelia-Naraja Hill scored 10 of her team-best 14 points after halftime. Gracie Elmore buried a trio of 3-pointers en route to her 12 points.
West Brunswick (2-7) plays the winner of Dixon/Northside in the semifinals on Saturday at 5 p.m.
Southeast Raleigh 57, Ashley 17
Semifinals of the John Wall Holiday Invitational at Cary Academy
The Screaming Eagles trailed 18-0 after the opening eight minutes and never got going offensively in the loss.
Saniya Rivers scored 13 of Ashley’s (6-3) 17 points. They will play Glenn in the third-place game Saturday at noon.
Fuquay-Varina 47, Cape Fear Academy 43
Consolation game of the John Jacobs Christmas Classic at Cleveland
Senior standout Chloe Kernan poured in 34 points, but it wasn’t enough.
Kernan scored 10 points in both the second and third quarters to keep the game close. CFA (9-5) 10 a.m. against Wake Christian in the seventh-place game.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Trask 47, Union 36
Championship game of the Kenny Bass Christmas Tournament at Hobbton
Tournament MVP Will Berry finished with 17 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals to lead the Titans to the title.
Trask (6-4) got off to a bit of a sluggish start by scoring only eight points in the opening quarter, but they finally got on track and eventually put the game away by outscoring Union 16-7 over the final eight minutes.
Tyran Pickett added nine points and Kywaun Warner finished with seven for the Titans, who travel to East Carteret on Jan. 3 at 7:30 p.m.
Wilmington Christian Academy 62, Hobbton 60 (OT)
Third-place game of the Kenny Bass Christmas Tournament at Hobbton
Greg Bowden scored 15 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter and overtime to lead the Patriots to a come-from-behind victory.
Bowden was named to the All-Tournament team. Eli Ball finished with 14 points and Zack Harrell buried four 3-pointers for 12 points for WCA (3-8), which trailed 37-32 after three quarters.
The Patriots are back in action at home against Harrells Christian Academy on Jan. 3 at 7:15 p.m.
West Brunswick 63, Scotland County 61
Semifinals of the Adidas Christmas Tournament at West Bladen
The Trojans advanced to the championship game behind another impressive performance from Jadyn Parker, who scored 27 points.
Parker was especially good in the 23-point third quarter that helped West Brunswick (8-2) cut a 10-point halftime deficit down to two. He had 10 points in the quarter.
Cal Collins scored 10 points, J’vian McCray added eight and Trevor Anderson finished with seven for the Trojans, who will play Pinecrest in the finals at 8 p.m. Saturday.
New Hanover 82, Caldwell Academy 44
Semifinals of the Rockingham County Holiday Classic
A balanced scoring effort led the Wildcats to a lopsided victory that put them in Saturday’s championship game.
Mikai Stanley led the way with 18 points and eight rebounds and fellow senior Jaheim Marshall chipped in 10 points and five steals.
New Hanover (5-3) also got nine points and four steals from Dee Barnett as well as eight points and 10 rebounds from Jarrod Vaughn.
Cape Fear Academy 61, Wando (S.C.) 37
First round of Rotary Roundball Classic at North Charleston Athletic Center
The Hurricanes shot 43 percent (24 of 56) from the field and came away with 20 steals to cruise to a comfortable victory.
Emmanuel Bonsu led all scorers with 17 points to go along with four rebounds and four steals. Ivan Misic added 14 points and six rebounds and Gavin Guion finished with 12 points and four steals.
CFA (9-6) forced 25 turnovers and only committed 11. They will take on the Porter Gaud, S.C. on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
Pamlico 70, North Brunswick 66 (OT)
Consolation game of the Adidas Christmas Tournament at West Bladen
Tate Davis and Elijah Elwood each had double-doubles, but a valiant comeback effort from the Scorpions came up short.
Davis finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Elwood had 11 points and 13 rebounds. North Brunswick (2-8) also got 16 points from Bryce Yeoman.
The Scorpions outscored the Hurricanes 22-8 in the fourth quarter to force overtime. They will play in the seventh-place game against host West Bladen on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Goldsboro 53, Coastal Christian 52
Semifinals of the FCA Winter Classic at Mount Olive
No information was provided.
Coastal Christian (6-5) will play Southern Wayne in the third-place game at 6 p.m. Saturday.
WRESTLING
Holy Angels Invitation at Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte
Laney sits in sixth place in the 84-team field after the opening day of competition.
Mark Samuel (106 pounds), Jayden Harrison (113), Marcus Mondragon (138), Seth Thomas (145), Devon Bell (170) and Emmanuel Bell (285) all advanced to the quarterfinals.
Samuel had a pair of pins and Mondragon had a pin and a tech fall. Thomas and Bell both won by pin and major decision. Harrison had a pin and a 6-4 decision and Bell opened with a 27 second pin before advancing with a 3-1 decision.
Two other Buccaneers – Kanenan Barriner (195) and Corey Pollock (220) – are still alive in the consolation bracket.
