GIRLS BASKETBALL

No. 3 New Hanover 53, No. 8 South Brunswick 39

A 15-0 run in the first half gave the Wildcats a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. 

Maleah Moses Braxton started the run by making a layup with 3:07 left in the first quarter to put New Hanover (6-2, 2-0 Mideastern) on top 11-10. 

A pair of free throws from Brianna Stanley with 40 seconds remaining before halftime made it 24-10.

South Brunswick (6-2, 1-1) finally scored on the ensuing possession when Meryn Deutsch banked in a 3-pointer. 

Stanley led the way for the visitors with 18 points. Justine McCague added 10 points, Zirhe Sellers scored nine, and Moses Braxton finished with eight. 

After seeing the lead balloon to 22 points early in the third quarter, the Cougars scored on four consecutive possessions to cut the deficit to 35-23 following a jumper from Addison Fitzhugh. 

The Wildcats responded by scoring eight points in a row to put the game out of reach.

South Brunswick sophomore Adyson Bell finished with a game-high 19 points. Teanna Perry scored eight points, while Deutsch added seven.

New Hanover plays Jacksonville on December 27 at 3 p.m. at the Hoggard Holiday Classic. A home game against Topsail on January 3 at 6 p.m. is next on the schedule for the Cougars.

No. 2 Laney 46, No. 7 Ashley 27

Freshmen Sofia Clayton and India Williams both scored 12 points for the victorious Buccaneers. 

Williams also grabbed a team-best nine rebounds, while Clayton knocked down two of Laney’s (5-1, 2-0) three shots from beyond the arc. Piper Conklin added nine points. 

Ashley’s (3-6, 0-2) leading scorer was Reagan Norris, who finished with 14 points thanks to four 3-pointers. 

The Buccaneers travel to North Myrtle Beach, S.C. for a 6 p.m. game Tuesday. The Screaming Eagles take on Cardinal Gibbons on December 27 at 4:30 p.m. at the Hoggard Holiday Classic.

No. 6 Topsail 53, No. 11 North Brunswick 40

Riley Trimble led a balanced offensive attack with 11 points, and the Pirates won on their home court for the second night in a row.

Ten players scored for Topsail (6-4, 1-1 Mideastern), which built a 33-13 halftime lead before putting it on cruise control in the second half. 

Charley Moore added 10 points, while Ryan Lambert scored seven. Jaelyn Dabideen made a pair of 3-pointers and finished with seven points. 

North Brunswick’s (2-4, 0-2) Ayanna Meyers scored 12 of her game-high 16 points in the second half.

The Pirates host White Oak at 5 p.m. Friday. The Scorpions return home to take on Carolina Forest, S.C. on Friday at 6 p.m.

No. 1 Hoggard 56, No. 4 West Brunswick 10

The Vikings were incredible defensively, holding the visitors without a field goal until midway through the third quarter. 

Tristan Shivers had another great performance with 19 points, nine assists, six rebounds and three steals. 

Hoggard (8-0, 2-0 Mideastern), which led 42-1 at halftime, also got 14 points from AK Chance and 13 points from Avery Fitzgerald. 

Chance, Fitzgerald and Shivers all made three 3-pointers. 

A road game against D.H. Conley on Tuesday at 5 p.m. is next on the schedule for the Vikings. West Brunswick (5-4, 0-2) plays in a Christmas Tournament at Lee County beginning on December 26.

No. 5 East Bladen 52, No. 16 Trask 12

NeNe Ward buried four 3-pointers and scored 20 points to lead the Eagles to their seventh win in a row. 

East Bladen (8-1, 1-0 Mideastern) jumped out to a 22-2 lead after eight minutes. It grew to 35-6 at halftime. 

Laila Smith finished with 13 points, while Ariel Cromartie scored six. 

Danyla Moore scored half of Trask’s (2-5, 0-1)  points. 

The Eagles play at East Columbus on Friday night at 6. The Titans visit Dixon at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

No. 10 East Columbus 29, Red Springs 19

The low-scoring defensive battle went the way of the Gators, who got all 29 points from three players. 

Malia Graham scored 11 points, while Malayah Hines and Mckenzie Spivey finished with nine a piece. 

East Columbus (5-2) hosts East Bladen at 6 p.m. Friday.

No. 13 Wilmington Christian Academy 46, Fayetteville Christian 15

The Patriots evened their record at 5-5 by getting scoring contributions from 10 players. 

Mallory Deutsch finished with a game-high 12 points, including eight in the third quarter. Fellow freshman Taylor Pierce chipped in 11 points. 

WCA also got seven points from Katelyn McCurry. 

A home game against Atlantic Collegiate, S.C. on January 3 at 2 p.m. awaits the Patriots. 

Concord Academy 76, No. 15 Coastal Christian 21

Evie Munroe scored 14 points, but the Centurions fell on the road against the talented Eagles. 

Coastal Christian (4-4) plays at Hickory Grove Christian at 11 a.m. Saturday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

No. 3 Laney 44, No. 8 Ashley 33

The Buccaneers pulled away by outscoring the Screaming Eagles 12-0 in the third quarter. 

Colin Lamb finished with a game-high 19 points. Laney (4-2, 2-0 Mideastern) also got nine points from Avery Pruitt.

Ashley (5-3, 1-1) led 15-9 after the first quarter, bit managed to score only 18 points over the final 24 minutes. Nate Jarrell led the way with seven points. 

Next up for the Buccaneers is a game at North Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. The Screaming Eagles meet Cary on December 27 at 3 p.m. at the Hoggard Holiday Classic.

No. 6 North Brunswick 64, No. 9 Topsail 53

A 40-point second half lifted the Scorpions to a comeback victory on the road. 

North Brunswick (4-2, 1-1 Mideastern) trailed 31-24 at halftime before scoring 21 points in the third quarter to build a one-point advantage. 

Kane Jenrette scored 15 of his game-high 19 points in the second half. Marcus Smith added 15 points, while Gabe Camacho and Jack Baker had nine a piece.

Topsail (4-4, 0-2) got 13-point performances from Rhett Britt and Duron Vaughn. 

Both teams will play at home Friday. The Scorpions welcome Carolina Forest, S.C. at 7:30 p.m., while the Pirates hosts White Oak at 6:30 p.m.

No. 2 Hoggard 57, No. 5 West Brunswick 42

Hunter McGrath connect on a 3-pointer from the top of the key midway through the first quarter to increase the Vikings’ lead to 12-2, and the home team put the game away by scoring 22 points over the final eight minutes.

McGrath made four shots from beyond the arc en route to a career-high 24 points. Will Seward added 12 points, while Flanner Patterson scored seven.

Hoggard (5-1, 2-0 Mideastern) led 24-16 at halftime, but it was trimmed to 35-31 after three quarters. 

K’Veon Griffin finished with 15 points for West Brunswick (5-4, 0-2). 

The Vikings play at Northern Guilford on Thursday at 7:30. The Trojans will compete in a Christmas Tournament at West Bladen beginning on December 26

No. 1 New Hanover 107, No. 12 South Brunswick 38

Eleven players scored for the Wildcats, who scored at least 20 points in every quarter.

It was the first time New Hanover (4-1, 2-0) surpassed the 100-point mark since January 19, 2007 (106-36 victory over West Brunswick).

Ny’zion Ballard led the way with 14 points. Five other players also reached double figures – Rodmik Allen (13), CJ Kornegay (13), Kam Witherspoon (12), Jazir Wright-McGhee (11) and Kellum Brown 10.

The Wildcats were up 35-6 after the first quarter and 57-22 at halftime. 

Jayden Daniels scored a team-high 13 points for South Brunswick (5-3, 0-2). 

New Hanover takes on Clayton at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Dexter Cooley Showcase at Wakefield. The Cougars play host Waccamaw, S.C. on Thursday at 8 p.m. in the first round of the Carvers Bay Showcase.

No. 11 East Bladen 64, No. 14 Trask 51

Keyshawn Kemp and Sherman Long both scored 16 points, and the Eagles earned the first victory in the series since 2015.

East Bladen (4-4, 1-0 Waccamaw) jumped out to a 20-10 lead after the first quarter. It grew to 15 points after three quarters.

Long made four of the team’s eight 3-pointers. Dominick Collins added nine points, while Chace Butler scored seven.

Trask (1-6, 0-1) entered the game on a 30-game winning streak in conference play. Gio Driggers finished with a team-high 13 points. Fellow sophomore Faqeeh Harmon and Trey Paffenroth chipped in nine points a piece. 

The Eagles visit East Columbus at 7:30 p.m. Friday. A road game at Dixon on Monday at 7 p.m. is next up for the Titans.

No. 10 Wilmington Christian Academy 66, Fayetteville Christian 49

The victorious Patriots shot a remarkable 66 percent (25 of 38) from the field and got double-figure scoring efforts from three players. 

Trent Davies scored a game-high 20 points. The freshman was 4 of 5 from beyond the arc

Logan Mattox finished with 13 points, five blocks and three assists, while Jordan Escoffery added 12 points and nine assists.  

WCA (4-6) made 10 of its 16 attempts from 3-point range. 

Next up is a game against Floyd County, Va. on December 30 at 11:15 a.m. in the first round of the Carolina Invitational in Charleston, S.C.
