No. 4 Ashley 2, Asheboro 1

Senior Luke Tierney scored off an assist from Colby Shoffner late in the first half to give the Screaming Eagles a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Shoffner found the back of the net in the second half to increase Ashley’s (1-0) lead to 2-0. Jeremy Pagoda had the assist.

Starting goalkeeper John Mostard didn’t concede a goal in his 40 minutes of action.

Next up is a match against Northern Guilford at 8 p.m. Friday at nCino Park in the Bash at the Beach.

No. 3 Laney 3, Pinecrest 1

Goals from Conner Wall, Tristan Mouney, and Andres Torres Romero lifted the Buccaneers to a road win.

Laney (1-0) goalkeeper Carson Mattox made four saves.

The assists were handed out by Torres Romero, Bishop Babcock-Giles, and Alvaro Hernandez Rodriguez.

The Buccaneers take on Cardinal Gibbons at 6 p.m. Friday at nCino Park in the Bash at the Beach.

No. 6 Cape Fear Academy 9, ALA Coastal 0

The Hurricanes scored six goals in the opening 15 minutes of the match to cruise to a mercy-rule victory in their season opener.

Freshman Liam Decker completed the scoring by finding the back of the net in the 29th, 30th, and 31st minutes in his first varsity action. Decker also assisted on Luke Desmond’s goal in the 10th minute.

Ethan Gatt scored twice and dished out one assist. Desmond had a pair of assists, while Vance Mino finished with two goals.

CFA (1-0) struck first in the second minute on a goal from Rob Lea. Carter Mann and Cooper Reed each had one assist.

Goalkeepers Jackson Renton and Jack Jones split time to share the clean sheet.

The Hurricanes host Concord Academy on Friday at 5 p.m.

Croatan 5, No. 5 Topsail 1

Sophomore Emil Hauser scored in the second half, but the Pirates weren’t able to overcome a 3-0 halftime deficit.

Topsail (0-1) finished with 13 shots.

The Pirates will look to rebound when they square off against Ardrey Kell on Friday night at 8 at nCino Park in the Bash at the Beach.

VOLLEYBALL

No. 2 Topsail 3, Lumberton 2

(20-25, 25-16, 19-25, 25-18, 15-12)

After dropping two of the first three sets, the Pirates rallied to take the final two and prevail on their home court.

Ava O’Reilly recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs. Kinsley Strnad hit .455 with six kills. Caroline Martin had eight kills in just three sets of action, while Josie Nelson put down six kills.

Topsail (1-0) also got 23 assists and five digs from Allison Losey. Fellow setter Anaya Redd handed out 14 assists.

Joining O’Reilly with double-digit digs was Grenier Lella, who finished with 13.

The Pirates play in a tournament at West Carteret on Saturday.

No. 14 Pender 3, Fairmont 1

(25-18, 21-25, 25-12, 25-17)

For the second day in a row, a strong offensive performance from senior Victoria Wells led the Patriots to a win.

Wells put down a team-best nine kills to go along with an ace. She also came up with three blocks.

Pender (2-0) got seven aces from Parker Wells as well as five kills and three aces from Merissa Crawford.

The Patriots will look to cap a perfect week when they visit James Kenan at 6 p.m. Thursday.

GIRLS TENNIS

New Hanover 9, West Henderson 0

Seniors Virginia Breeden (No. 2) and Emma Miller Buchanan (No. 4) both cruised to 6-0, 6-0 singles victories in the road sweep.

New Hanover’s (1-0) other singles points came from Elizabeth Sifly (6-0, 6-1 at No. 1), Lila Brown (6-2, 6-1 at No. 3), Maggie Hooks (6-4, 6-0 at No. 5), and Elizabeth Lewis (6-1, 6-1 at No. 6).

The No. 1 doubles team of Brown and Yaren Aslanturk didn’t drop a game. Breeden teamed up with Laynie Fortun for an 8-4 win, while Hooks and Lewis prevailed by a score of 9-7.

The Wildcats play at T.C. Roberson on Thursday at 4 p.m.
