VOLLEYBALL

No. 1 Hoggard 3, No. 7 South Brunswick 0

(25-18, 25-16, 25-12)

The Vikings cruised on the road in the season opener for both teams thanks to the powerful right arm of reigning Coastal Preps Offensive Player of the Year Norah Davis.

The UNCW commit put down a match-high 15 kills while hitting .440.

Natalie Byrd hit .444 with six kills, while Olivia Green also put down six kills.

Brynn Austermiller won 15 service points and finished with a team-high six aces to help the Scorpions give first-year coach Asali Anderson a victory in her debut.

Freshman middle Alayna Allen put down three kills. Anderson praised her team’s defense, which was instrumental in allowing less than 15 points in all three set wins.

North Brunswick (1-0) plays at South Brunswick on Thursday night at 6.

Other scores

East Bladen 3, No. 12 Trask 1 (set scores not provided)

Lumberton 3, No. 13 West Brunswick 0 (25-8, 25-7, 25-22)

BOYS SOCCER

No. 2 New Hanover 3, Heritage 2

Elmer Reyes found the back of the net to break a 2-2 tie and give the Wildcats an impressive victory on the turf at Legion Stadium.

It was a hard-fought battle between two of the most consistent teams in the state over the past decade. New Hanover (1-0) has won at least 15 matches in nine of the past 10 seasons, while Heritage has finished with a losing record just once during that stretch.

The Wildcats’ other goals were scored by Tre Bennett and Miles Bickel.

Mathias Alfaro and Keinner Martinez each dished out one assist.

New Hanover faces Apex Friendship on Friday at 6 p.m. at nCino Park in the Bash at the Beach.
