BASEBALL
No. 12 East Bladen 3, No. 3 Whiteville 1
A two-out RBI double from Isaiah Lee in the bottom of the third inning put the Eagles on top for good in an impressive home win.
Jayce Hatcher pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts. He scattered five hits and allowed one unearned run.
After allowing the tying run in the top of the third, East Bladen (8-7, 7-4 Waccamaw) immediately responded. Andrew Musselwhite singled with one out and advanced to second base on a ground out from Colton Daly. He scored the winning run on Lee’s double to right field.
Tyler Eason led off the sixth inning with a double before scoring an insurance run on a wild pitch.
Lee and Davion Lewis both collected two hits.
Whiteville’s (13-2, 7-2) Jake Odham was 2-for-4 with the lone RBI.
The series concludes at Whiteville on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
No. 2 Ashley 3, Grace Christian 1
Senior third baseman Drew Potter hit a solo home run in the second inning before driving in the other two runs with a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
Potter’s homer came on a 3-0 count. Quinn Bentley and Tanner Berry both crossed the plate on the long sacrifice fly.
The Screaming Eagles welcome West Johnston at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
No. 1 Laney 10, Randleman 0 (5 innings)
The Buccaneers remained scorching hot by finishing with eight hits and five walks in the mercy-rule win.
Leadoff batter Carston Wedemeyer went 3-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run scored.
Trent Fowler gave Laney (13-4) a quick lead with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning. He increased the lead to 7-0 in the fourth with a two-run base hit.
TJ Ziermann and Jason Sproull followed with RBI singles, while Owen Gore completed the scoring with a double.
Fowler, Sproull, Dylan Cooper and Jack Holliman all crossed the plate twice.
JB Brooks pitched a one-hitter with four strikeouts and only one walk.
The Buccaneers will look to increase their winning streak to 10 when they take on Pinecrest at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Buck Hardee Field.
No. 11 East Columbus 14, No. 15 Trask 4 (5 innings)
Sophomore Braylon Waddell drove in five runs and scored twice in a comfortable victory for the Gators.
The game ended early when Gauge Simmons crossed the plate on an error. He also earned the victory by scattering three hits with four strikeouts in 3 2/3 scoreless innings.
Waddell drilled a grand slam to left field in the third inning to increase East Columbus’ (9-6, 5-4 Waccamaw) lead to 10-0.
Mack Freeman went 2-for-2 with a walk, one RBI and two runs scored. Brooks Mclean scored three runs, while Simmons and Nick Rye each scored twice.
Trask’s (4-13, 1-8) Cooper Uhland hit a two-run double in the fifth.
The series resumes at Trask on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Pinecrest 5, No. 4 New Hanover 4
The Wildcats fell behind 5-2 and couldn’t rally despite getting a strong performance at the plate from Camden Croom, who went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.
Tate Nelson pitched well but suffered the loss. He allowed five runs (one earned) with seven strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. Hudson Southerland gave up one hit and struck out three batters in his 1 1/3 innings.
New Hanover (11-6) cut the deficit to 5-4 with two runs in the fifth, but the tying run was stranded at third base. The home team put runners on the corners with two outs in the seventh inning before the game ended on a fly out.
A home game against Corinth Holders at 7 p.m. Tuesday awaits the Wildcats.
Grimsley 10, No. 10 Hoggard 9
The Vikings built a 7-0 lead after four innings, but couldn’t hold on as they suffered their sixth consecutive one-run loss.
Grimsley put seven runs on the board in the top of the fifth and added three more in the sixth.
Sophomore standout Brandon Bush led Hoggard (5-13) offensively by going 3-for-4 with a double, two stolen bases, two RBI and two runs scored.
Brock Adkins and Julian Guthrie had two hits a piece, while Jonah Harker scored twice.
Four pitchers saw action and allowed only one earned run. The Vikings made two critical errors in the fifth inning and another in the sixth.
Hoggard will try to bounce back when it hosts Wilmington Christian Academy on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Trinity 8, No. 13 Wilmington Christian Academy 5
Maddoux Batts had a great day at the plate by going 4-for-4 with a double, one RBI and one run scored, but the Patriots fell at home.
WCA (4-11) also got two hits from Matthew Naylor .
A game at Hoggard on Tuesday at 7 p.m. is next on the schedule.
SOFTBALL
No. 7 Pender 6, No. 15 West Columbus 1
Kenyatta Jacobs, Jayda Tozour and Kaylee Woodcock all finished with two hits for the victorious Patriots.
Jacobs belted a two-run home run in the fifth inning to increase Pender’s (12-5, 5-4 Waccamaw) lead to 5-0. She also crossed the plate twice.
Woodcock also had two RBI, while Kimora McAllister scored two runs.
Pitcher Alyna Rooks struck out 12 batters and didn’t issue a walk in a complete game. The run she allowed was unearned.
The series concludes at West Columbus (1-9, 0-9) on Wednesday night at 6.
No. 5 East Columbus 10, No. 9 Trask 0 (6 innings)
The Gators remained unbeaten in Waccamaw Conference behind a no-hitter from sophomore pitcher Gracie Coyle, who recorded eight strikeouts.
East Columbus (14-2, 9-0) finished with 10 hits and five walks. Skylah Collins was 2-for-4 with an RBI triple and three runs scored.
Aleigh Godwin doubled home Collins with two outs in the bottom of the first inning to put the Gators on top.
The teams will meet at Trask (11-5, 5-4) on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
No. 8 East Bladen 5, No. 13 Whiteville 3
Shortstop Tatum Allen was 3-for-4 with a double, two stolen bases, two RBI and one run scored for the Eagles, who have now won six consecutive games.
East Bladen (7-5, 6-4) scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the score and then added two more runs in the sixth on singles from Gracie Clark and Allen.
Clark finished 2-for-3, while Taylor Dowless had a walk and triple. Jenna Brice pitched a complete game with five strikeouts. Only one of the runs she allowed was earned.
Whiteville (6-11, 4-5) got back-to-back singles from Margaret Cartrette and Madalyn Edge in the seventh inning, but they were stranded.
Cartrette was 2-for-3 with one run scored. She was the hard-luck loser after allowing only two earned runs with nine strikeouts.
Fellow senior Campbell Thompson went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
The Eagles travel to South Columbus at 5 p.m. Tuesday. The Wolfpack will look to even the series when they host East Bladen on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Cape Fear 11, No. 3 Hoggard 4
The visiting Colts sent 15 batters to the plate during a 10-run top of the fifth inning that all but sealed the victory.
Hoggard (7-7) led 2-1 after four innings. Logan Ulrich had an RBI bunt single, and fellow sophomore Sami Hoemman followed with a ground out that allowed Macey Ciamillo to score.
Ulrich finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Alyssa Norris went 2-for-2 with a walk and one run scored.
Ciamillo got the start in the circle but didn’t factor into the decision. She allowed one unearned run on two hits with six strikeouts in three innings.
The Vikings welcome Midway at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
GIRLS SOCCER
No. 11 North Brunswick 4, No. 10 West Brunswick 2 (OT)
The Scorpions avenged an earlier-season loss by scoring twice in the second 10-minute overtime session.
After finishing regulation tied at 1-1, both teams found the back of the net once in the opening 10 minutes of OT.
Emma Putnam scored twice for North Brunswick (8-10, 3-8 Mideastern), while Gracelynn Bruno and Anna Putnam had one goal a piece. Ali DeHart handed out a pair of assists.
The Scorpions host Trask at 7 p.m. Tuesday. West Brunswick (4-9-2, 2-7) returns home to face West Bladen on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
No. 5 Cape Fear Academy 3, Newton-Conover 0
Two goals in each half lifted the Hurricanes to an eighth consecutive victory.
CFA (12-1-1, 9-0 CPIC) broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 33rd minute from Harper Wilharm off an assist from Georgie McGrath.
Five minutes later, Emma Gibbs put home what turned out to be the game winner off an assist from Milly Kelley.
Millie Heaney (44th) and Abbey Moran (78th) also scored. McGrath had two assists and Gibbs added one.
Goalkeeper Naomi Shanewise finished with three saves.
A match at Grace Christian on April 24 at 5 p.m. awaits the Hurricanes.
No. 9 East Bladen 9, No. 17 Whiteville 0
NeNe Ward scored four goals and fellow senior Jakie Medina Leal added three goals and four assists for the Eagles, who earned their third straight mercy-rule win.
Macey Potter scored the other two goals to go along with one assist. East Bladen (11-1-1, 9-1 Waccamaw) also got two assists a piece from Anna Miranda and Gabby Rebollar.
The teams play again, this time at Whiteville (5-7-1, 4-5), on Wednesday night at 7.

BOYS TENNIS
Southeastern Homeschool 7, Waccamaw (S.C.) 2
The Cardinals secured four singles points before sweeping doubles to secure the victory.
Daniel Boehling had a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles. Klaus Johnson (6-0, 6-2 at No. 4), Eli Yandle (6-0, 6-1 at No. 5) and Aiden Yandle (6-2, 6-3 at No. 6) also prevailed.
The No. 1 doubles team of Boehling and Haddon Bebb had a score of 8-3. Eli Springer/Eli Yandle (No. 2) and Johnson/Aiden Yandle (No. 3) both picked up 8-6 victories.
Next up for Southeastern Homeschool (8-2) is a home match against new Life Camp on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Cape Fear Academy 9, Parrott Academy 0
Jaxon Rogers rallied for a 5-7, 7-5, 12-10 victory at No. 3 singles to help the Hurricanes complete the sweep.
Caden Mathew also had a hard-fought 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 6. The other points came from Owen Watkins (6-2, 6-1 at No. 1), Trey Regan (6-2, 6-0 at No. 2), Deniz Erdem (6-1, 6-0 at No. 4) and Reed Pulliam (6-0, 6-0 at No. 5).
Erdem and Pulliam didn’t drop a game at No. 3 doubles. Watkins and Regan prevailed by a score of 8-5 at No. 1, while Rogers and Mathew picked up an 8-3 victory at No. 2.
CFA (10-2, 8-0 CPIC) hosts Southeastern Homeschool on April 24 at 4 p.m.
