One of the state’s best rivalries was one-sided from the start, as the Vikings held a 23-3 advantage in shots. 

It was the most lopsided score in the series since another 5-0 victory for Hoggard (9-1-1, 6-0 Carolina Coast) on April 16, 2013.

The Vikings broke through with a goal from Greyson Fisher in the 22nd minute. Airlie Altman won the ball and found Brielle Archer, who played a through ball to Fisher. 

The lead doubled eight minutes later on a low shot from Airlie Altman from just outside the box. 

Sophie Scott got in on the action five minutes into the second half by chipping a lot shot just inside the far post. 

Archer (76th) and Charley Ray (78th) both found the back of the net late in the match. 

Goalkeeper AK Chance earned the first clean sheet of her career. 

A home match against New Hanover on Monday at 6 p.m. awaits Hoggard. Ashley (10-2-1, 5-2) hosts Topsail at 6 p.m. Thursday. 

No. 5 Laney 6, No. 8 North Brunswick 0

The Buccaneers prevailed by scoring three goals in each half.

Langdon Russ recorded the first hat trick of her career. She opened the scoring in the 23rd minute off an assist from Olivia Hennessey. 

Russ’ other goals came in the 44th and 79th minutes.

Sadie Salling found the back of the net twice (30th and 48th), while Maggie Millard scored in the 39th minute. 

Laney (6-4, 4-2 Carolina Coast) got a combined five saves from goalkeepers Caeli Sullivan (four) and Cooper Contentino (one), who shared the clean sheet. 

The Buccaneers host West Brunswick at 6 p.m. Friday. North Brunswick (7-7-1, 2-4) welcomes Southeastern Homeschool on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

No. 10 West Brunswick 7, West Bladen 0

Sadie Jones and Grace Migliore each finished with two goals and two assists in the dominant win. 

Maddie Richardson scored once and dished out an assist. The other goals came from Londyn Fogel and Blakely McMullan. 

West Brunswick (4-6-1) got one assist apiece from Nicole Cortez-Rivera and Mary Payton Pendergrass.

Next up is a match at South Brunswick on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

BASEBALL

No. 3 New Hanover 9, No. 5 South Brunswick 1

Patrick McIntosh pitched a complete game, scattering four hits and striking out five batters to lead the Wildcats to a fourth consecutive victory. 

New Hanover (12-4) scored five runs in the fourth inning and then added three more in the fifth to pull away for good. 

Andy McIntosh singled and scored the first run on a base hit to right field from Adler Stumpf. Logan Pearce and Nick Marren added RBI singles. 

The fifth inning featured run-scoring hits from Carter Ponnett and Pearce. 

Ponnett finished with two RBI and two runs scored, while Marren and Pearce both had two RBI. Camden Croom scored three times, and Andy McIntosh crossed the plate twice. 

South Brunswick (9-7) scored its lone run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly from Cameron McMahan.

The Wildcats visit Hoggard at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The Cougars travel to South Columbus on Tuesday night at 7.

No. 2 Laney 7, Midways 5

Dominic Civelli, Ty Duleba, and Owen Gore all finished with two hits for the Buccaneers in a hard-fought road win. 

The game was tied at 5-5 after five innings. Matthew Nance singled and advanced to third base on a two-out double from Duleba in the sixth. The senior catcher then crossed the plate on a passed ball. 

Laney (13-3) added an insurance run in the seventh inning on an RBI single from Civelli. 

Midway sent the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the frame, but Aiden Woods closed things out by getting a groundout. He was the winning pitcher after allowing two runs with three strikeouts in four innings. 

A game at Ashley on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. awaits the Buccaneers. 

No. 8 Wilmington Christian Academy 15, Bethel Christian Academy 5 (5 innings)

All nine starters had at least one hit and a run scored in the mercy-rule victory. 

Catcher Cayden Woolard was 3-for-3 with a walk, two RBI, and two runs. 

Maddoux Batts finished 2-for-2 with an RBI double and two runs, while Landen Edwards and Ethan Stanley both went 2-for-4 with two runs. 

An RBI single from Justin Taylor in the bottom of the third inning gave WCA (15-5, 7-0 NCCSA 2A District 4) a 5-4 lead. Dewarren Hand followed with a three-run home run to left field. 

The Patriots tacked on five more runs to make it 13-4. Matthew Naylor, Stanley, and Woolard all had RBI hits.

Eighth grader Finn Smith’s sacrifice fly allowed Woolard to cross the plate and end the game. 

Batts earned the win by pitching three innings and striking out four batters. Taylor didn’t allow a hit and had a pair of strikeouts in his two innings of work.

WCA hosts Living Water Christian at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

BOYS TENNIS

North Brunswick 5, Laney 4

Freshmen IV Shaw and Max Nance secured a hard-fought 9-7 victory at No. 2 doubles to help the Scorpions avenge an earlier-season loss. 

North Brunswick (6-9, 5-6 Carolina Coast) also got an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles from Jason Stine and Rome Molina. 

Stine rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 10-4 at No. 1 singles. Molina had a score of 6-1, 7-6(9) at No. 3, while Nance secured a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4. 

The Scorpions play at Wilmington Christian Academy at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Laney (5-7, 5-5) hosts Hoggard on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Southeastern Homeschool 6, Waccamaw (S.C.) 1

The Cardinals won all five singles matches to cruise on the road. 

Calvin Bebb prevailed by a score of 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5, while Eli Springer had a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 4.

Daniel Boehling (6-2, 6-3 at No. 2) and Klaus Johnson (6-4, 6-2 at No. 3) secured two more points. On the No. 1 court, Hadden Bebb dropped the first set 6-3 and was leading 4-2 in the second when his opponent was forced to retire. 

Springer teamed up with Jack Willson for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles. 

Next up is a match at Green Hope on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

BOYS GOLF

at Diamondback Golf Club (Par 72)

South Brunswick’s Nolan Bumgarner shot a 1-over-par 73 to secure a four-stroke victory over teammate Baker Hartman.

Both players finished with three birdies. The Cougars also counted a 79 from Gregor Brock and an 84 from Brody Beatini.
