Oak Island Loggerheads 2, Cape Fear Ghost Crabs 0

Pitchers Kyler Hanson (Wayne State, Neb.) and Caleb Cloninger (Cleveland CC) combined on a three-hit shutout to give the Loggerheads their first victory in the series.

Hanson got off to a fast start by striking out the side in the bottom of the first inning. He scattered two hits and struck out six batters in five innings.

Cloninger pitched the final four innings, allowing only a leadoff bloop single to Trey Pierce (Brunswick CC/WCA) in the top of the ninth inning. Cape Fear (13-5, 11-4 Coastal Division) brought the winning run to the plate with two outs, but a terrific play from third baseman Rocco Tenuta (Hillsdale, Mich.) ended the game.

Oak Island (8-9, 8-9), which had been outscored 34-9 in the previous three meetings, grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a two-out double to left field from Tenuta.

It scored Donovan Brooks (Neumann, Pa.), who had worked a walk and then stole second base.

Max Guenther (Moberly Area CC, Mo.) led off the seventh inning with an infield hit. John Wirt (Hampden-Sydney, Va.) followed with a base hit of his own to put runners on the corners with two outs.

A throwing error on an attempted double play allowed Guenther to cross the plate with the final run.

Guenther and Pierce both finished 2-for-4.
