Trey Pierce (Brunswick CC/WCA) had his best performance of the summer, and the Ghost Crabs reached the 15-run mark for the third straight day.
The recent Queens commit went 3-for-3 with two walks, a grand slam, six RBI, and three runs scored. Pierce is now hitting a remarkable .414 (29-for-70) with a team-high 25 runs.
Another local product – Coleman Cross (West Virginia Wesleyan/Ashley) – also remained hot by going 2-for-4 with one RBI. He leads the Ghost Crabs (13-3, 11-2 Coastal Division) with a .441 batting average (15-for-34).
Pierce’s grand slam in the top of the second inning gave Cape Fear a 5-2 lead. Jack Cuba (Catawba/New Hanover) led off with a double. Ryan Seagroves (Brunswick CC) followed with a single, while Kayden Leck (Owens CC, Ohio) worked a two-out walk to load the bases.
The advantage grew to 7-2 in the fourth on a two-out, two-run single up the middle from Pierce.
A six-run seventh inning allowed the game to end early by mercy rule.
The Ghost Grabs finished with 14 hits and eight walks. Seagroves was 2-for-3. Leck, Drew Nye (Highland CC, Kan.), and Dylan Stacks (North Brunswick) all crossed the plate twice.
Stacks pitched five innings, allowing three runs and striking out four batters, to earn the win. Davis Watson (Lynchburg, Va.) scattered one hit in two scoreless innings.
Oak Island’s (7-9, 7-9) Ryan Riojas (Montgomery Bell Academy, Tenn.) hit a solo home run in the fifth inning. Riojas and Donovan Brooks (Neumann, Pa.) both had a pair of hits.
