Oak Island Loggerheads 10, Laurinburg Highland Hooligans 9
The Loggerheads scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to avoid the upset and move above .500 on the season.
Brady Nathison (Towson, Md.) came through with the game-winning RBI single to right field to cap a terrific night. He finished 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored.
The inning began with a base hit from Donovan Brooks (Neumann, Pa.). After stealing a pair of bases, he crossed the plate on a squeeze bunt from Max Guenther (Moberly Area CC, Mo.) to cut the deficit to 9-8.
Rocco Tenuta (Hillsdale, Mich.) worked a walk before the squeeze. A single from Justin Dawkins (North Greenville, S.C.) put runners on the corners.
A double steal allowed Tenuta to score the tying run and put Dawkins into scoring position. That brought Nathison to the plate. After fouling off a 1-2 pitch, the extra hitter singled to right field.
Relief pitcher Clark Breedlove (Patrick & Henry CC, Va.) struck out two of the four batters he faced in the ninth inning to lock down the save.
Oak Island (11-10, 11-10 Coastal Division) finished with 10 stolen bases, including a team-high three from Guenther.
Tenuta belted a solo home run in the fifth inning to tie the score at 7-7.
Dawkins was 3-for-4 with two runs, while Abe Fenwick (Charleston, W.Va.) also went 3-for-4 with one RBI.
The Loggerheads scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, all with two outs. Matthew Perez (Catawba Valley CC) singled home Dawkins. Two batters later, Breedlove brought in two runners with a base hit.
Cape Fear Ghost Crabs 9, Jacksonville Ospreys 4
Brent Avery (Blufield, Va./Ashley) pitched a gem as the Ghost Crabs rolled at home to move back into sole possession of second place in the Coastal Division standings.
The top teams at the end of the regular season will receive an opening-round bye in the playoffs.
Avery scattered only two hits and recorded seven strikeouts in six scoreless innings.
Cape Fear (18-7, 16-6) gave him plenty of early run support by scoring all nine runs in the first four innings.
Brock Polilli (Tiffin, Ohio) started a two-out rally in the second by working a walk. Kayden Leck (Owens CC, Ohio) reached on an error, and Will Jones (WCA) walked to load the bases.
Back-to-back RBI singles from Ryan Seagroves (Brunswick CC) and Coleman Cross (West Virginia Wesleyan/Ashley) made it 2-0.
Leck had a two-run single an inning later. A groundout from Jones allowed Pollili to cross the plate.
Jack Cuba’s (Catawba/New Hanover) double in the fourth inning plated Trey Pierce (Brunswick CC/WCA). The final run was scored by Gavin Marceric (Tiffin, Ohio) on a groundout from Dylan Stacks (North Brunswick).
Pierce finished 2-for-4 with a stolen base. Marceric scored twice, while Cross drove in a pair of runs.
