Jack Cuba (Catawba/New Hanover) drove in a pair of runs, including the game-winner on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning, to give the Ghost Crabs a win on their home turf at UNCW’s Brooks Field.

Cuba also had a two-out RBI single up the middle in the third inning to increase Cape Fear’s (17-8, 15-6 Coastal Division) lead to 2-0.

Starting pitcher Ryder Whitacre (Brunswick CC/WCA) didn’t factor into the decision, but he was excellent. The righty allowed only one run on three hits with nine strikeouts in five innings.

Oak Island (10-10, 10-10) cut the deficit in half in the fourth inning when Rocco Tenulta (Hillsdale, Mich.) singled home Max Guenther (Moberly Area CC, Mo.).

Jayden Marvin’s base hit to left field plated Brady Wozniak (Washington, Md.) in the top of the eighth to tie the score, but the Loggerheads stranded the bases loaded.

Ghost Crabs second baseman Jack Holliman (Pitt CC/Laney) led off the bottom of the frame with a single. Trey Pierce (Brunswick CC/WCA) worked a walk, and Gavin Marceric (Tiffin, Ohio) moved both runners up 90 feet with a sacrifice bunt.

That brought Cuba to the plate, and he came through with a deep fly ball to right field that allowed Holliman to score easily.

Relief pitcher Brock Polilli (Tiffin, Ohio) gave up an infield single in the ninth inning, but retired the next three batters to close the door.

Oak Island finished with seven hits, including two apiece from  Tenulta and Justin Dawkins (North Greenville, S.C.).

Shallotte Shallywags 6, Jacksonville Ospreys 5

The Shallywags scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning despite managing only one hit to earn their first Coastal Division victory over a team other than Laurinburg.

Dylan Dotson (Bluefield, Va.) led off the inning by reaching on a hit by pitch. Alex Ditmore (Motlow State CC, Tenn.) and Brady Smouse (USC Sumter) worked back-to-back walks to load the bases with no outs.

Dotson scored on a fielder’s choice to cut the deficit to 5-3. Another walk, this time to Jaden Gummersbach (Pensacola State, Fla.), again put runners on every base.

Following a popout on the infield, an error kept the game alive and made it 5-4.

Cody Crafton (Bluefield, Va.) fell behind 0-2 before hitting a single up the middle to plate a pair of runs and give Shallotte (4-20, 4-20) the lead.

Grayson Hulen (Brunswick CC) retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth, including a pair of strikeouts. He earned the win by pitching 2 1/3 hitless innings with four strikeouts.

Starter Samuel Davis (Augusta, Ga.) allowed only three earned runs with eight strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.
