The Ghost Crabs scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning to prevail in their final regular-season home game, which took place in front of a nice crowd at Brooks Field on the campus of UNCW.
Trey Pierce (Brunswick CC/WCA) led off the inning by using his speed to beat out an infield single. He advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt from Gavin Marceric (Tiffin, Ohio).
Jack Cuba (Catawba/New Hanover) followed with an infield hit of his own to put runners on the corners.
Pinch hitter Dylan Stacks (North Brunswick) did his job by putting the ball in play. Jacksonville (20-9, 17-9) third baseman Mason Meyer (Lenoir CC) attempted to cut down the go-ahead run at the plate, but his throw was off line. Cuba capitalized on the error by advancing all the way to third base.
With two outs, Brock Polilli (Tiffin, Ohio) came through with a clutch hit to increase the Cape Fear (22-10, 19-9) lead to 3-1.
Polilli was the only player to have a multi-hit performance.
Relief pitcher Max Swart (Immaculata, Pa.) pitched four shutout innings to secure the win. He allowed two hits and recorded four strikeouts.
In his first outing as a member of the Ghost Crabs, Wilmington native Mason Botbol (N.C. Wesleyan) struck out six batters and allowed only one run on two hits in five innings.
