2024 Girls Tennis Co-Player of the Year: Sophia Catino

Now that most of the fall sports season has come to a close, it’s time to reveal the All-Coastal Preps teams. Over the next week, you will get to know more about the players of the year while also seeing who made first and second team in girls tennis, girls golf, boys and girls cross country, boys soccer and volleyball.

For the fourth consecutive year, the Coastal Preps Girls Tennis Co-Player of the Year is senior Sophia Catino from New Hanover.

Sophia’s Accomplishments

Entering her final school season with the Wildcats, Sophia Catino had already cemented her place as one of the greatest high school players from Wilmington. 

She added to her legacy by cruising to a NCHSAA 4A doubles state title with fellow senior Hanna Davis. The duo became the first state champions in program history following a 6-1, 6-4 win over Agnes Shinn and Makayla Nofziger of Myers Park.

They didn’t drop a set at the Mideastern Conference Tournament, 4A East Regional or 4A State Championship.

Catino was 20-0 in doubles and 11-2 in singles, but she was forced to retire while leading in both losses.

Over the course of her career, Catino went 69-7 in singles and 69-4 in doubles.

She will continue her playing career right here at UNCW.

Where is one place you’ve never been that you’d like to visit?: I’d love to visit the Amalfi Coast in Italy.

Are you a planner or do you go with the flow?: I am definitely a planner. 

What is your favorite way to relax?: Walking my dog at the loop at Wrightsville Beach.

Would you rather be able to breathe underwater or fly?: I would rather be able to fly.

What are 3 things you are grateful for in your life?: My family, friends, and my dog

Do you prefer to shop online or in person?: I like to shop in person.
