For the first time since the 2018-19 season, the Vikings finished off a regular-season sweep over their rival.

The victory also put Hoggard (16-5, 8-1 Carolina Coast) alone in first place in the conference standings with three games remaining.

Neither team led by more than four points in the first half. The Vikings held a slim 27-23 advantage entering the locker room.

A layup from Porter Morgan on the second possession of the second half made it a six-point lead, but New Hanover (14-6, 7-2) quickly closed the gap to one by scoring on four straight trips down the floor.

The visitors were never able to get over the hump, as Hoggard seemed to have an answer every time it became a one-possession game.

A floater from Hunter McGrath with just under four minutes remaining in the game increased the lead to 50-40. The Wildcats cut it to three on two occasions, but the Vikings responded with easy points in the paint from Will Seward both times.

McGrath finished with 17 points, and Seward added 11.

“We talk about in those late-game situations how we want layups and free throws,” Hoggard coach Brett Queen said. “Sometimes, teams get to where they just want to shoot free throws. If you miss them, you are putting a lot of pressure on yourself. I think being aggressive at that point in the game was important.”

New Hanover was paced by Ja’zir Wright-Mcghee (20) and Kellum Brown (15).

The Wildcats scored the game’s first four points on offensive rebounds and putbacks. As time went on, the Vikings matched that intensity and came up with several key 50-50 balls late in the game to help seal the win.

“It felt like early on they were getting every loose ball, but in the second half, we were the team making the effort plays and creating some extra possessions for ourselves,” Queen said.

Next up for the Hoggard is a game at North Brunswick on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. New Hanover will look to bounce back when it hosts West Brunswick at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
