With their dad on the sideline coaching, brothers Trent and Reece Davies combined for 26 points to lead the Patriots to their first state title since 1984.

Dave Davies took over a struggling program that went 2-18 during the 2023-24 and needed only two years to bring a long-awaited championship back to Wilmington.

Trent had another impressive showing by scoring 19 points to go along with eight steals, three assists, and three rebounds. Despite missing six games due to an injury, the talented sophomore scored 416 points (18.9 per game). He reached double figures in all but one game.

Through his first two high school seasons, Davies has scored 973 points.

Reece made a pair of 3-pointers and finished with eight points despite being the only middle schooler on the court.

WCA (23-5) trailed 17-16 after eight minutes before building a 29-21 halftime advantage.

The Patriots shot 49 percent from the field (21 of 43) and came away with 17 steals. Parker Brown scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds.

Ten of the 12 players who suited up for the Warriors scored as they cruised into the semifinals.

SCA (19-3) connected on eight 3-pointers, including six in the first half to build a commanding 51-9 advantage. The final 16 minutes were played with a running clock.

Leading the balanced offensive attack was Ziyon Smith with 12 points. Uzziah Marlowe scored all 11 of his points before halftime, while Peyton Peterson added nine.

Four other players scored at least five points.

The Warriors welcome No. 3 New Garden Friends School on Tuesday night at 7.

Like they’ve done all season, the Patriots played outstanding defense to capture the state championship.

It was the 12th time WCA (23-5) held its opponent to less than 20 points.

Both teams got off to slow starts with the Patriots leading 4-0 after the opening quarter and 12-4 at halftime. A 12-point third quarter allowed WCA to create some separation.

Ava Gray scored 12 of her game-high 13 points in the second half. Mallory Deutsch added nine points, while Emily Bloom finished with eight.

The Patriots surpassed the 20-win mark for the first time since going 21-4 during the 2010-11 season.

Eighth grader Shaniyah Brown scored 17 of her game-high 21 points in the first half to send the Warriors into the semifinals.

She was joined in double figures by three teammates. Ella Lynch finished with 14 points, Ella Gregory added 12, and Angelina Lauver chipped in 11.

SCA (16-5) wasted little time asserting its dominance, building a 25-8 lead after the first quarter. It grew to 41-16 at halftime.

Lynch connected on three of the team’s eight 3-pointers.

The Warriors will be back at home on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. for a game against No. 3 Lawrence Academy.

No. 3 Gaston Christian 71, No. 6 Cape Fear Academy 62

NCISAA 3A Quarterfinals

Senior guard Milly Kelley scored 28 points, but the undersized Hurricanes couldn’t keep their terrific season alive.

Gaston Christian is led by 6-foot-3 forward Brooklyn Twitty as well as 6-foot-7 center Happy Arune, who are both being recruited by Division I programs.

CFA (24-3) trailed 20-12 after the first quarter and 41-31 at halftime. Londyn Doughty recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Lulu Wells chipped in eight points and nine assists, while fellow junior Emma Gibbs finished with 11 points.

The Hurricanes set a school record for wins in a season with 24.
