BOYS WRESTLING

No. 1 Laney 48, No. 4 Athens Drive 30

The Buccaneers reached the East final for the sixth consecutive season by rallying from an early deficit. 

Athens Drive recorded pins in four of the first six bouts to build a 24-9 lead, but Loukas Maselli stopped the momentum with a huge pin in 1:55 at 120 pounds. 

Laney (35-8) would go on to win six of the final seven bouts, including three by pin. 

Sam McQueen’s pin in 1:27 at 138 cut the deficit to 30-25. Vincent Valentino followed with a fall of his own at 144 to give the home team its first lead since 6-0.

Eli Thomas rolled to a 24-8 tech fall at 150, and Abram Stoebig clinched the victory by pinning his opponent at 157 in 1:12.

Mac Kopelman received a forfeit at 165 with the outcome already decided.

Michael Messick opened the match in style by recording a pin in 40 seconds at 175. Laney’s other victories came from Darrell McIntyre (15-11 decision at 285) and Asher Goodlow (19-11 major decision at 126). 

Next up is a showdown against No. 2 Millbrook, which advanced with a 47-29 victory over No. 3 Apex. The match will take place at a date and location to be announced.

First round NCHSAA 8A dual team playoffs

Wins in 11 of the 14 bouts easily advanced the Buccaneers to the second round. 

Laney never trailed as Mac Kopelman received a forfeit at 165 pounds in the first bout of the evening. 

Six competitors had pins in less than a minute – Darrell McIntyre (56 seconds at 215), Gabe Maselli (48 seconds at 106), Sam McQueen (41 seconds at 138), Vincent Valentino (52 seconds at 144), Eli Thomas (47 seconds at 150), and Abram Stoebig (46 seconds at 157). 

At 113, Hayes Anderson finished his opponent in 3:02. Thomas Gillespie had a 10-1 major decision at 190, while Asher Goodlow won 14-7 at 126.

Robert Gillespie was awarded a forfeit at 285.

No. 7 West Brunswick 48, No. 10 Westover 30 

First round NCHSAA 6A dual team playoffs

All eight of the Trojans’ victories came via pin or forfeit. 

Tristan Winburn had the fastest pin of the night, needing just 56 seconds to end his bout at 120 pounds. 

West Brunswick’s other falls came from Josh Connick (3:18 at 150), Isaac Holden (0:59 at 157), Liam Keane (1:13 at 215), and Garrison Abbott (2:48 at 285).

Ayden Hewett (106), Jacob Dalverny (144), and Bryson Mabe (190) were awarded forfeits. 

No. 2 Jacksonville 43, No. 7 West Brunswick 31

First round NCHSAA 6A dual team playoffs

The Trojans won six bouts, but it wasn’t enough to keep their season alive. 

Heavyweight Garrison Abbott secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory, while Josh Connick rolled to a 12-2 major decision at 150 pounds.

West Brunswick (22-5) got pins from Tristan Winburn (120), Isaac Holden (165), and Mayson Clarelli (175). Juwann Harrell won by disqualification at 132.

No. 3 Apex 45, No. 6 Hoggard 30

First round NCHSAA 8A dual team playoffs

Brothers Rory and Finley Gallagher recorded back-to-back pins at 120 and 126 pounds, respectively, but the Vikings fell. 

Rory needed only 36 seconds to end his contest, while Finley’s pin came in 4:46.

Hoggard (18-16) also got a 19-3 tech fall from Jude Moulton at 175. Mason Schoen scored four team points by cruiting to a 15-5 major decision at 106.

The other points came from Alex Walters (12-6 decision at 138) and Mason Hocker (forfeit at 285). 

No. 3 Eastern Randolph 48, No. 14 Pender 36

First round NCHSAA 3A dual team playoffs

The Patriots got a pin from Justin Flowers at 113 pounds to even the score at 6-6, but Eastern Randolph answered with a 42-6 run to put the match out of reach. 

Pender (8-18) received forfeits in the final four bouts – Baylor Harris (175), Bruce Rogers (190), Andrew Robinson (215), and Jordan Sawyer (285). 

GIRLS WRESTLING

NCHSAA 7A East Regional

Four competitors from Topsail reached the podium and earned a spot in next week’s state championship.

Junior Italia Squicciarini finished as the runner-up at 132 pounds. She opened with a bye before recording back-to-back pins to reach the final, where she fell by pin to unbeaten Isabella Hernandez of Jack Britt. 

The Pirates also got fourth-place finishes from Abigail Roberts (107), Jordyn Barrett (120), and Alexa Willis (126).

BOYS SWIMMING

NCISAA Division II State Championship

Cape Fear Academy junior Max Lewis captured the state title in the 100 breaststroke by touching the wall in 59.71.

His closest competitor was Ezekiel Herzog of Asheville Christian (1:02.07).

Lewis had a phenomenal day with three other top-five finishes. He was third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:05.15.

Lewis swam the opening leg on the runner-up 200 freestyle relay (1:35.06). Joining him were Christian Miller, Garrett Ellison, and Jace Williams.

The four swimmers placed fifth in the meet-ending 400 freestyle (3:36.12). 

The Hurricanes scored 196.5 points to finish fourth out of 24 teams. 

Ellison was fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.46) and seventh in the 100 freestyle (52.49). 

Williams’ lone individual event was the 50 freestyle, where he finished seventh with a time of 23.03.

Miller earned a pair of ninth-place finishes in the 100 butterfly (1:03.96) and 100 backstroke (1:05.32).

Max Hammer placed seventh in the 100 backstroke (1:03.41) and 10th in the 200 freestyle (2:09.30).

The 200 medley relay team of Hammer, Williams, Owen Holt, and Jacob Sorbel had a time of 1:57.34 to finish ninth.

GIRLS SWIMMING

NCISAA Division II State Championship

Two relay teams from Cape Fear Academy placed inside the top six, while a pair of youngsters from the area secured top-10 individual finishes. 

The 400 freestyle relay team of Kaitlyn Kemp, Jane Hertz, Saunders Harvey, and Annderson Petroff had a time of 4:16.54 to finish fourth. 

All four swimmers also participated in the 200 medley relay, where they were sixth with a time of 2:07.29.

Petroff, a seventh grader, was 10th in the 100 butterfly after touching the wall in 1:08.52. 

Coastal Christian freshman Piper Cockman completed the 100 freestyle in 1:01.42 to finish eighth. She later placed 12th in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.79). 

Cape Fear Academy finished 11th out of 24 teams with 84 points. Coastal Christian was 18th with 22 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

No. 7 South Brunswick 53, Fairmont 52

After falling by 34 points in the first meeting, the Cougars were able to get revenge and move into a tie atop the Southeastern Conference standings. 

Meryn Deutsch was her usual dominant self with 34 points. The multi-sport standout made four of South Brunswick’s (14-2, 7-1) five 3-pointers. 

Adyson Bell added 11 points for the Cougars, who play at Whiteville on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

No. 4 Laney 51, No. 6 New Hanover 38

The Buccanneers were able to complete the season sweep behind a game-high 15 points from sophomore Sofia Clayton. 

Laney (14-8, 7-4 Carolina Coast) led 27-24 at halftime before extending it to 38-28 after three quarters. 

Leading the way for New Hanover (11-10, 5-6) were Kha’niya Bryant and Jazziyah Smith with 12 points apiece.

Next up for the Buccaneers is a home game against North Brunswick at 6 p.m. Friday. The Wildcats welcome Topsail on Friday night at 6:30.

No. 5 Ashley 57, No. 11 West Brunswick 36

Reagan Norris connected on five 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 17 points to help the Screaming Eagles bounce back nicely from Monday’s disappointing defeat.

Elin Bentley also reached double figures with 13 points. Ashley (13-9, 5-5 Carolina Coast) got eight points from Jakicey Gardner. 

West Brunswick’s (6-17, 2-10) top offensive performer was Keniyah Brown with eight points. 

A home game against North Brunswick at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday is next up for the Screaming Eagles. The Trojans have concluded the regular season.

No. 1 Hoggard 59, No. 13 North Brunswick 14

The Vikings jumped out to a 17-2 lead after the opening eight minutes and increased it to 31-4 at halftime. 

Nine of the 10 players who saw action scored, led by 14 points from AK Chance. The Randolph-Macon signee also grabbed seven rebounds. 

Tristan Shivers chipped in 12 points, eight assists, four rebounds, and three steals. 

Hoggard (21-1, 10-0 Carolina Coast) can clinch its fifth consecutive conference title with a home victory over Topsail on Wednesday night at 6. 

North Brunswick (0-18, 0-10) travels to Ashley for a 6:30 p.m. game Wednesday. 

No. 2 Cape Fear Academy 68, Epiphany 19

First round CPIC Tournament 

Milly Kelly celebrated Senior Night in style by drilling nine 3-pointers and scoring a career-high 40 points. 

Kelly went 15 of 25 from the field. She added eight steals and five rebounds.  

CFA (20-2) also got 12 points from Lulu Wells, as well as 16 rebounds and six steals from fellow junior Addie Fikry.

Next up is a semifinal showdown against John Paul II at 4 p.m. Thursday at Parrott Academy.

BOYS BASKETBALL

No. 2 New Hanover 68, No. 3 Laney 64 (OT)

For the second night in a row, the Wildcats survived a scare on their home court to remain alone in sole possession of second place in the Carolina Coast Conference. 

With his team trailing by one, Kellum Brown was fouled at midcourt with 1.8 seconds left. The senior made his first free throw attempt to send the game to overtime.  

Brown led all players with 23 points. New Hanover (16-6, 9-2) also got 19 points from Ja’zir Wright-Mcghee and 17 from Ny’Zion Ballard. 

Laney (14-9, 7-4) entered the fourth quarter with a 47-39 advantage, but trailed 57-55 until Montana Davis drilled a 3-pointer with four seconds to play. 

The Wildcats inbounded the ball just short of midcourt and called a timeout with 1.8 seconds on the clock. On the ensuing inbounds, Brown was fouled before the pass was even attempted. 

Kareem Anderson scored 21 points for the Buccaneers. Joining him in double figures were Davis (11), Colin Lamb (11), and Whit Lamb (10).

Both teams have home games Friday. New Hanover welcomes Topsail at 8 p.m., while Laney hosts North Brunswick at 7:30 p.m.

No. 9 Trask 63, Clinton 60 (OT)

A 3-pointer from Quincy Moore late in overtime gave the Titans a one-point lead, and he sealed the victory with a layup at the buzzer. 

Trask (13-8, 5-4 East Central) was able to survive despite committing 26 turnovers and finishing 15 of 27 from the free throw line. 

Moore led the way offensively with 17 points, including four 3-pointers. Gio Driggers recorded a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds.

KJ Murphy and Mathias Sonne both chipped in 11 points. 

The Titans wrap up the regular season with a home game against SW Onlsow at 7 p.m. Friday. 

No. 1 Hoggard 72, No. 4 North Brunswick 43

The Vikings increased their winning streak to eight games by scoring 22 points in the first quarter to build a 13-point lead that would continue to grow. 

Will Seward scored 12 of his game-high 22 points in the opening half. Hunter McGrath added 17 points, while Lukas Batchelor finished with 10. 

Hoggard (17-5, 9-1 Carolina Coast) can clinch the No. 1 seed for next week’s conference tournament with a win in either of its final two games against Topsail (Wednesday) or Ashley (Friday). 

Kane Jenrette was the lone North Brunswick (15-7, 5-5) player to reach double figures. He scored 14 points.

The Scorpions play at Ashley on Wednesday at 8 p.m.

No. 10 South Brunswick 57, Fairmont 37

Three players reached double figures for the Cougars, who dominated the second half by outscoring the visitors 35-17.

Jayden Daniels once again led the way with 19 points. Cameron Howard and Jaxon Wallace each finished with 10 points.

South Brunswick (14-6, 6-2 Southeastern) plays at Whiteville on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

No. 6 Cape Fear Academy 69, Faith Christian 33

First round CPIC Tournament 

Forward Stan Romer scored 14 of his game-high 23 points in the first half, and the Hurricanes rolled to a comfortable win on Senior Night. 

CFA (19-10) scored 19 points in each of the first two quarters to enter the locker room at halftime with a 38-18 lead. 

Colin Simmons connected on three 3-pointers en route to his 13 points, while Alex Wolf added eight. 

The Hurricanes will take on Wayne Country Day in the semifinals on Thursday at 8 p.m. at Parrott Academy.
