No. 9 New Hanover 3, Northside-Jacksonville 1

The Wildcats got their season started with a win for the third consecutive season by serving a remarkable 29 aces.
Justine McCague led the way with nine, while Emma Fitzsimmonds chipped in eight.
In her first high school match, freshman setter Maille Smith handed out 21 assists to go along with three kills and two aces. Classmate Libby Harrington finished with five kills.
New Hanover (1-0) got a team-best 11 kills from Maddie Sawyer.
A road match at New Bern on Wednesday at 6 p.m. is next up for the Wildcats.
No. 14 Cape Fear Academy 3, Epiphany 1
(22-25, 25-18, 25-10, 25-15)
A triple-double of 15 kills, 19 digs and 13 aces from junior outside hitter Mary Ryan Campbell led the Hurricanes to a season-opening victory on the road.
Cate Broderick chipped in seven kills, nine digs and four aces. CFA (1-0, 1-0 CPIC) also got five kills, six digs and one ace from Frankie Osborne.
Sophomore setter Lila Hammer finished with 17 assists, 10 digs and two aces. Sofia Ezzell added 12 assists to go along with a pair of digs.
The Hurricanes will be back on the road Friday night at 5:15 against Grace Christian in Sanford.
No. 17 North Brunswick 3, No. 16 Pender 1
(25-13, 21-25, 25-17, 25-11)
After dropping the second set, the Scorpions rallied to grab the final two and give first-year coach Justin Garza a win in his debut.
Individual stats weren’t available for North Brunswick (1-0), but senior libero Keira Anderson led the way in digs and aces.
The Scorpions have already matched their win total from 2023 when they finished 1-19. They will be back in action at 6 p.m. Tuesday at South Columbus.
Pender (0-1) will look to rebound when it hosts Wallace-Rose Hill on Wednesday night at 6.

BOYS SOCCER
No. 13 South Brunswick 4, No. 16 Whiteville 0
Sophomore Tristen Baker found the back of the net twice to help the Cougars snap a 14-match losing streak.
South Brunswick (1-0) held a slim 1-0 halftime lead. Crayton Dail finished with one goal and one assist, while fellow senior Gannon Herring put home the other goal.
Collin Peattie saved both shots he faced to earn the clean sheet.
The Cougars finished 1-16 a season ago, with the lone win coming in the third match against South Columbus on August 28. Next up is a home match against Cape Fear Academy on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Whiteville (0-1) welcomes West Brunswick at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
No. 11 West Brunswick 8, No. 15 South Columbus 0
Mason Dean finished with a hat trick and two assists in a lopsided season-opening win.
Tyler Harbin added two goals and two assists, while Marlon Leon had one goal and one assist. West Brunswick’s (1-0) other goals were scored by Eduardo Bonifacio and Derek Rivera.
Melvin Bautista and Fernando Bonifacio each handed out one assist.
Goalkeepers Jacob Rumsey (five saves) and Brayden Griffith (two saves) shared the clean sheet.
Both teams have a road match Wednesday night at 6. The Trojans visit Whiteville, while South Columbus (0-1) travels to Purnell Swett.
