BASEBALL

No. 5 New Hanover 12, Cedar Ridge 8

An eight-run top of the second inning put the Wildcats on top for good.

New Hanover (9-4) exploded for 15 hits from 10 players. Chase Leonard went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and four RBI, while Camden Croom finished 2-for-3 with a walk, double, triple, three RBI and two runs scored. 

Adler Stumpf, Tate Nelson and Davis Hinshaw had two hits a piece. Nelson and Hudson Southerland each crossed the plate twice.

Southerland pitched well in a relief role by allowing one run on two hits with four strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings. 

Next up is a game at North Brunswick on Friday at 6:30 p.m. 

No. 3 Laney 6, Green Hope 3

After scoring twice with two outs in the bottom of the first inning, the Buccaneers added three more in the second to increase their winning streak to five.

JB Brooks crossed the plate with the first run on a triple from Trent Fowler. TJ Ziermann followed with a single to right field. 

Brooks had an RBI single in the second inning and a double in the fourth. Mason Jones doubled twice and scored both times, while Jackson Noon also had a pair of hits. 

Brooks earned the victory by allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit in 2 2/3 innings. Jesse Smith pitched 1 2/3 innings and Aiden Woods got the final eight outs for the save.

Laney (9-4) hosts West Brunswick at 6:30 p.m. Friday. 

No. 6 South Columbus 12, No. 11 East Bladen 0 (5 innings)

The Stallions scored at least one run in each of their five trips to the plate and finished with 12 hits in a lopsided road win.

Walker Sullivan was 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and two RBI, while fellow senior Tyler Thompson went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI.

Easton McPherson and Dylan Cullipher had two hits a piece. 

South Columbus (10-2, 7-0 Waccamaw) pitchers Colton Allen and Levi Stocks combined on a four-hitter with seven strikeouts and only one walk.

East Bladen (4-7, 3-4) leadoff batter Davion Lewis went 2-for-2 with a walk.

The Stallions play at West Columbus on Friday night at 7, while the Eagles visit Trask at 7 p.m. Friday.

SOFTBALL

No. 12 East Bladen 9, No. 9 South Columbus 8

For the second night in a row, the Eagles used a late rally to pick up a one-run Waccamaw Conference victory.

East Bladen (3-5, 2-4) trailed 8-3 before scoring six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Taylor Dowless, Mollie Tolar, Niyah Wooten and Tatum Allen all had run-scoring hits.

Wooten went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Tolar, Jenna Brice and Gabriella Bray all finished with two hits. 

South Columbus’ (4-6, 2-4) Carmen Buck hit a two-out double in the top of the seventh inning, but was stranded when Brice got Chloe Cribb to pop up.

Brice pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win. Starting pitcher Gracie Edwards allowed only three earned runs with six strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.

Both teams play on the road Friday at 6 p.m. The Eagles visit Trask, while the Stallions travel to West Columbus.

Midway 1, Hoggard 0 (14 innings)

The Vikings suffered a tough road defeat despite getting an incredible pitching performance from Macey Ciamillo, who struck out 15 batters and issued only three walks.

Ciamillo finished with 186 pitches, including 128 that went for strikes. 

Her counterpart, sophomore Kyleigh Stonerock, scattered only two hits and recorded 28 strikeouts. She also issued 10 walks, which forced her to throw 234 pitches. 

Hoggard (6-4) stranded 12 baserunners, including two in the top of the 13th inning. Charlotte Lee led off with a single and advanced to second base on a one-out walk by Ciamillo. A strikeout and pop up ended the threat.

Midway finally broke through in the 14th inning. Ella Clark tripled to right field and then beat the throw home on a ground ball to shortstop off the bat of Samantha Carter.

A home game against South Brunswick at 6 p.m. Friday awaits the Vikings. 

BOYS TENNIS

Cape Fear Academy 6, Rocky Mount Academy 3 

The Hurricanes took two of three doubles courts and then added four singles points to secure the win.

Deniz Erdem and Will Pohlman dropped only one game at No. 3 doubles, while Owen Watkins and Jaxon Rogers prevailed by a score of 8-4 at No. 1.

Watkins (6-4, 6-3 at No. 1) and Erdem (6-1, 6-1 at No. 3) were also victorious in singles. CFA’s (7-2) other points came from Reed Pulliam (6-2, 6-0 at No. 4) and James Atkinson (6-1, 6-0 at No. 6. 

Next up is a home match against Epiphany on Monday at 4 p.m.

Laney 8, South Brunswick 1

Sophomores Michael Liu and Jacob Pape earned three-set singles victories to help the Buccaneers clinch the match prior to the start of doubles.

Liu had a score of 6-4, 5-7, 13-11 at No. 3, while Pape had a 6-2, 3-6, 10-5 win at No. 5.

The other singles points came from Ibrahim Moya (6-2, 6-4 at No. 1), Cutter Moore (6-2, 6-1 at No. 4) and Jacob Johnson (6-3, 6-4 at No. 6).

Laney (7-7, 5-5) swept doubles. The top team of Moya and Moore dropped only one game. Pape teamed up with Yusuke Sugawara for a 9-7 win at No. 2, while Donald Reid and Dawson Small had an 8-4 victory at No. 3. 

The Buccaneers host New Hanover at 4 p.m. Thursday. South Brunswick (3-6, 3-6) visits Hoggard on Thursday at 4 p.m.

GIRLS SOCCER

No. 13 East Bladen 6, No. 15 South Columbus 1

Senior Jackie Medina Leal scored four goals and dished out two assists to lead the Eagles to a dominant home victory.

East Bladen (7-1-1, 5-1 Waccamaw) also got one goal a piece from Bella Beard and NeNe Ward as well as three assists from Gabby Rebollar.

Goalkeeper Aubrie Nixon finished with five saves. 

The Eagles play at Trask on Friday at 6 p.m. South Columbus (6-5-1, 4-1) visits West Columbus at 5 p.m. Friday.
