2024 Hoggard Holiday Classic Day 1 Boys Recaps

Six-foot-10 senior center Alan Studebaker poured in a career-high 24 points to lead the Buccaneers to their six straight victory.

Laney (6-2) has held each of those opponents to fewer than 55 points.

After building a 35-28 halftime lead, the Buccaneers extended it to 52-40 with a strong third quarter that included three 3-pointers. 

Colin Lamb scored 15 points, while Jordan Mosley and Avery Pruitt finished with eight a piece. 

CFA (8-7) had two players reach double figures – Kareem Anderson (18) and Isaiah Gibson (10).

Laney faces off against South Mecklenburg on Saturday night at 6. The Hurricanes will try to bounce back against Croatan at noon Saturday.

No. 1 New Hanover 85, Pine Lake Prep 59

Ten Wildcats scored in the victory that was never in doubt. 

New Hanover (7-2) opened the game on a 9-0 run and extended it to 16-2 midway though the first quarter. The advantage was 40-24 at halftime.

Nolan Billings scored a season-high 19 points, while Rodmik Allen and Quin’sier Waddell each finished with 14.

Pine Lake Prep (8-2) got 18 points from Joseph Bruce and 13 from Jamie Lawson.

Both teams will be back in action Saturday. The Wildcats play First Flight at 4:30 p.m., while the Pride take on Ashley at 3 p.m.

No. 2 Hoggard 69, Franklin Academy 49

The Vikings scored at least 18 points in each of the first three quarters to roll on their home court. 

Hunter McGrath and Will Seward tied for a team-high with 19 points. Both players connected on three of Hoggard’s (8-1) 10 3-pointers. 

Seven other players also reached the scoring column. The Vikings led 19-9 after the first quarter and 37-22 at halftime. 

Franklin Academy (8-4) got 22 points from Hayes Lewis. He made all 10 of his free throw attempts. 

Hoggard plays Cary at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, while the Patriots take on East Bladen on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Cary 74, No. 8 Ashley 54

Jonathan Peery buried six 3-pointers and finished with a career-high 29 points for the victorious Imps.

Cary (5-6) had an outstanding shooting performance by knocking down 12 shots from beyond the arc. Stone Holcombe scored 14 points, Chase Cleveland added 11, and Brandon Nixon chipped in nine. 

The Imps led 21-9 after the first quarter and 37-21 at halftime. 

Nate Jarrell scored 18 points and Parker Pratt had 12 for Ashley (5-4).

Cary squares off against Hoggard at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, while the Screaming Eagles play Pine Lake Prep on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Croatan 80, No. 14 East Bladen 63

The highest-scoring team in the event put on a great offensive display, especially in the second half. 

Trey Jones led all players with 27 points. He made six of Croatan’s (7-2) 11 3-pointers. 

Kannon McBride (14 points), Jaden Hilliard (13) and James Clemens (10) also reached double figures. The Cougars held a 38-30 halftime advantage before exploding for 24 points in the third quarter to pull away for good. 

East Bladen (4-6) got 19 points a piece from Dominick Collins and Keyshawn Kemp.

Next up for Croatan is a game against Cape Fear Academy on Saturday at noon. The Eagles play Franklin Academy at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

South Mecklenburg 65, First Flight 57

A 39-point second half gave the Sabres a hard-fought victory. 

Ben Houpt scored eight of his team-high 13 points in the third quarter. South Mecklenburg (6-6) also got 11 points from Jim Gatehouse as well as nine a piece from Myles Howard and Muju Williams . 

The game was tied at 26 at halftime. 

First Flight (4-3) got a 32-point performance from Mason Dobie. He went to the free throw line 15 times and made every attempt. Judah Carlyle also reached double figures with 10 points. 

The Sabres take on Laney at 6 p.m. Saturday, while the Nighthawks play New Hanover on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
