Cape Fear Ghost Crabs 5, Jacksonville Ospreys 1
A strong outing from starting pitcher Ryder Whitacre (Brunswick CC/WCA) lifted the Ghost Crabs to a home win.
The righty allowed one run on five hits with three strikeouts in seven innings to secure his first victory of the young season. Aiden McBride (Southeastern CC/Hoggard) and Brock Polilli (Tiffin, Ohio) closed the door by pitching one shutout inning apiece.
Cape Fear (8-3, 6-2 Coastal Division) finished with 11 hits. Leadoff batter Trey Pierce (Brunswick CC/WCA), who committed to Queens University earlier in the day, went 3-for-4 with a pair of stolen bases and two runs scored.
Pierce led off the bottom of the first inning with a double and scored on a a sacrifice fly from Drew Beard (Lenoir-Rhyne).
Jacksonville (5-4, 4-4) evened the score in the top of the sixth inning, but the Ghost Crabs answered back immediately in the bottom of the frame.
Jack Cuba (Catawba/New Hanover), Drew Nye (Highland CC, Kan.), and Ryan Seagroves (Brunswick CC) hit consecutive two-out singles.
Beard increased the lead to 3-1 with an RBI hit to right field in the seventh. Dylan Stacks (North Brunswick) followed with a two-run single to complete the scoring.
Nye finished 2-for-4, while Beard stole two bases.
Sandhills Bogeys 7, Oak Island Loggerheads 6
Oak Island nearly made an outstanding comeback from a 7-0 deficit, but ultimately came up short against the only unbeaten team in the Coastal Division.
Former South Brunswick standout Jaden Marvin (USC Salkehatchie) had a big night at the plate by going 3-for-4 with a double, solo home run, and two runs scored.
Ryan Riojas (Montgomery Bell Academy, Tenn.) also homered in the seventh inning to cut the deficit to 7-2. Later in the inning, Banks Hartman (N.C. Wesleyan/South Brunswick) singled home Marvin.
Hartman singled with two outs in the ninth before being replaced by pinch runner Donovan Brooks (Neumann, Pa.), but he was stranded at first base.
Oak Island (5-5, 5-5) also got two hits from Ayden Cline (Missouri St. Louis).
Lauringburg Highland Hooligans 9, Shallotte Shallywags 8 (10 innings)
It looked as if the Shallywags were finally going to pick up their first victory, but the Highland Hooligans scored once in the eighth, ninth, and 10th innings to prevail at home.
Shallotte (0-9, 0-9 Coastal Division) took a 6-5 lead by scoring three runs in the top of the seventh. Justin Sheffield (Florida Southwestern) worked a walk with the bases loaded, and Dillon Bullard (Mount Olive) followed with a two-run single.
After Laurinburg (2-5, 2-5) evened the score in the bottom of the frame, the Shallywags answered with two runs in the eighth. Andrew Corney (Robeson CC) led off with a double and later crossed the plate on a wild pitch. A two-out walk by Jaden Gummersbach (Pensacola State, Fla.) with the bases loaded made it 8-6.
The Highland Hooligans were down to their final strike, but Yulio Ceron (Skyline, Calif.) came through with a clutch single to send the game to extra innings.
Shallotte was unable to bring home its runner from second base in the top of the 10th. Laurinburg secured a walk-off win on a one-out single from Nikolas Alvarez (USC Lancaster).
Bullard, Dylan Dotson (Bluefield, Va.), and Garrett Powell (Francis Marion/West Brunswick) all collected two hits for the Shallywags.
