No. 3 New Hanover 9, Southern Alamance 8

After falling behind 4-0, the Wildcats rallied at home by scoring three runs in the third inning and tacking on five more in the fourth.  

Andy McIntosh had the biggest hit of the night with a bases-clearing triple that evened the score at 6-6. The senior center fielder raced home on a wild pitch to put New Hanover (9-4) on top for good.

McIntosh finished with four RBI and two runs scored. Leadoff batter Hudson Southerland stole a pair of bases and scored three times. 

A sacrifice fly from Colton Creech in the sixth inning provided a much-needed insurance run. 

Southern Alamance (7-8) scored on a throwing error in the top of the seventh and had the tying run at third base, but a groundout ended the threat. Jackson Lee recorded the save by striking out two of the three batters he faced. 

The Patriots got a terrific performance from sophomore shortstop Camden Whittemore, who went 3-for-4 with a double and five RBI. 

New Hanover welcomes Eastern Alamance at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Southern Alamance plays at Hoggard on Wednesday at 1 p.m.

Eastern Alamance 5, No. 6 North Brunswick 4 (9 innings)

A terrific game ended in controversial fashion after Tyler Westbrooks was ruled safe at home after tagging up on a shallow sacrifice fly. 

Westbrooks opened the bottom of the ninth inning by reaching on an error. Landon Blackard worked a walk, and both runners advanced 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt.

Jarrett Newell was intentionally walked to load the bases. John Wittig lifted a full-count pitch into the air, where North Brunswick (8-8) center fielder Jonah Campbell raced in to make the catch and delivered a great throw to the plate. 

Westbooks didn’t touch the plate initially, but he was ruled safe after diving back. It looked as if catcher Andrew Corbin applied a tag.

Eastern Alamance (7-7) finished with seven hits and eight walks. Westbrooks was 2-for-4 with a walk and three runs scored. 

The Scorpions tied the score up in the top of the seventh inning on a base hit from Dylan Stacks. 

Campbell, Fisher Goodwin, and Grayson Skipper all had two hits. 

Eastern Alamance plays at New Hanover on Tuesday at 4 p.m. North Brunswick takes on Corinth Holders at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Hoggard. 

No. 2 Laney 13, Princess Anne (Va.) 6

Junior center fielder Carston Wedemeyer belted a pair of home runs to lead the Buccaneers to a victory. 

Wedemeyer led off the game with a single and scored the first run on a double from JB Brooks. His two-run homer in the second inning increased the Laney (11-3) lead to 4-0.

Princess Anne (2-6) evened the score on a two-out grand slam from Aidan McKeating in the bottom of the frame, but the Buccaneers regained the lead for good by scoring twice in the third inning on base hits from Dom Civelli and Mason Nance. 

Wedemeyer belted a grand slam in the fifth inning to all but seal the win. He went 3-for-5 with six RBI and three runs scored. 

Brooks finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two RBI, and one run. Nance was 3-for-5, while Dylan Cooper, Davis Croom, and Brock Downing all scored twice. 

Princess Anne’s Andrew Hayes was 3-for-4 with one run. McKeating had two hits and a walk. 

Laney plays Sun Valley at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Ashley. The Cavaliers wrap up their trip with a game against Pinecrest on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Buck Hardee Field. 

No. 7 Hoggard 11, Salem (Va.) 0 (5 innings)

Christian Atkinson and Aiden Weninger combined on a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts and only one walk. 

Atkinson pitched the first four innings and struck out seven batters. Weninger fanned all three batters he faced. 

Hoggard (10-7) led 4-0 after three innings before exploding for seven runs in the fourth. Brothers Tristan and Taylor Stewart hit back-to-back RBI doubles. 

Brandon Bush doubled home another run. Preston Smith followed with a base hit and then scored on an error. Atkinson drilled an RBI double, and Grady Ochipa closed the scoring with a base hit. 

Taylor Stewart was 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored. Bush and Smith also crossed the plate twice. 

The Vikings host Southern Alamance on Wednesday at 1 p.m. Salem (3-5) squares off against Uwharrie Charter Academy at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Buck Hardee Field. 

Sun Valley 11, No. 9 Ashley 1 (6 innings)

Right-handed pitcher Bryson Thomas struck out eight batters and allowed an unearned run in five dominant innings.

John Jackson took over in the sixth and recorded three strikeouts to finish off the victory.  

Sun Valley (9-8) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first inning and increased it to 8-0 after three. 

The Spartans finished with 13 hits from 10 players. Ayden Matzke was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and one run scored. 

Tyler Newell went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI, and one run. Justin Iannetto and Beau Green both crossed the plate twice. 

Ashley’s (2-15) lone hits came from Logan Dehn, Matt Sacewicz, and Xander Tsingelis.

Sun Valley plays Laney on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Ashley. The Screaming Eagles follow with a game against Pine Lake Prep at 4 p.m.

Pinecrest 8, Pine Lake Prep 7

The Patriots finished with 11 hits and scored at least one run in five of their seven trips to the plate to secure a hard-fought victory. 

Bohdi Robertson went 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI, and one run scored. Freshman Owen Todd also had three hits, including an RBI triple.

A single from Robertson in the top of the sixth inning plated William Chopping to increase the Pinecrest (13-3) lead to 7-5.

Pine Lake Prep (11-5) evened things up in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly from Kelton Osborne and a single from Jack Scott. 

In the top of the seventh inning, Cody Graham hit a one-out single to right field and eventually scored the winning run on a passed ball. 

Todd recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the game. 

Pinecrest takes on Princess Anne, Va. at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Buck Hardee Field. Pine Lake Prep visits Ashley on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Uwharrie Charter Academy 3, Union Pines 2 

The three-time defending state champions bounced back nicely from Monday’s loss. 

Jaxon Mabe led off the top of the sixth inning with a double. He stole third base and scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly from Ty McAuley.

Uwharrie Charter Academy’s (12-4) other two runs came in the first inning. Levi Mitchell had an RBI single and later crossed the plate on a passed ball. 

Mabe also tripled and scored on Mitchell’s base hit. 

McAuley pitched six strong innings, allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts. Keaton Hill allowed a base hit in the seventh, but ended the game with a strikeout. 

The top two hitters in the Union Pines’ (12-6) lineup – David Park and Braedon West – both collected two hits. Willy Rivera had a sacrifice fly in the third inning and evened the score at 2-2 with a single up the middle in the fifth. 

Dylan Benedict was the hard-luck loser. The junior allowed one earned run on four hits with eight strikeouts in six innings. 

Uwharrie Charter Academy ends its stay in Wilmington with a game against Salem, Va. at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Buck Hardee Field. Union Pines plays Providence Grove on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Hoggard. 

Corinth Holders 5, Providence Grove 0

Eli Cash and Tanner Day both finished with a pair of hits to give the Pirates a second straight win. 

Day singled home Cash and Tripp Johnson in the second inning to put Corinth Holders (12-4) on top for good. 

The score remained the same until the fifth inning, when Alex Houseman came through with a two-out RBI double to center field. 

Back-to-back run-scoring base hits from Connor Dunlop and Day an inning later completed the scoring. 

Carter Wall earned the win by pitching 5 1/3 innings with five strikeouts. Ethan Street recorded the final five outs. 

Providence Grove (7-7) finished with nine hits, including two from Bishop Moore. 

Senior pitcher Trevor Kirkman threw a complete game and allowed only one earned run. 

Both teams will be back in action on Wednesday at Hoggard. Corinth Holders faces North Brunswick at 4 p.m., while Providence Grove takes on Union Pines at 10 a.m.
