COASTAL PREPS THREE STARS OF THE NIGHT

FLAG FOOTBALL

Ashley 26, Laney 12

The Screaming Eagles rallied from a 12-0 deficit by scoring 26 unanswered points to remain unbeaten.

Sophomore quarterback Caroline Smist went 19 of 23 for 153 yards and three touchdowns. She also carried the ball 11 times for 63 yards and another score. 

Chloe Laverty hauled in a pair of TD passes. She finished with eight catches for 61 yards. Mariah Brown had four catches for 54 yards and a touchdown.

The defense was led by Reese Ingram with 10 flag pulls. Maisy Croom came up with six. 

Ashley 38, New Hanover 0

Interceptions from Maisy Croom and Sophia Lewis helped the Screaming Eagles preserve the shutout. 

Diane Grasso had six flag pulls, while Reese Ingram chipped in five. 

Ashley (9-0, 7-0 Carolina Coast) got four touchdown passes from Caroline Smist. She finished 7 of 13 for 113 yards. 

Mariah Brown caught TD passes of 14 of 54 yards. Elin Bentley and Chloe Laverty had the others.

For the second week in a row, Hoggard sophomore Elliott Waters secured medalist honors. 

The talented youngster made four birdies en route to a 3-under-par 69. She birdied two par 4s and a pair of par 5s. 

New Hanover’s Susan Davis had an outstanding round of 72 that featured birdies on holes No. 1 and 10 to secure a runner-up finish. 

Laney remained unbeaten on the season with a 21-stroke victory. Allie Casey, Peyton Johnson, and Alexis Ogden all shot 76. The trio combined to make six birdies.

BOYS SOCCER

No. 9 Trask 4, SW Onslow 1

Judah Rico scored twice and dished out an assist for the Titans, who remained unbeaten in their last eight matches. 

Trask (9-3-5, 2-0-1 East Central) also got one goal and two assists from Edgar Jesus Montiel Valerio. The other goal came from Jafet Bailon. 

Next up is a match at Clinton on Monday at 6 p.m.

Hoggard 4, Myrtle Beach (S.C.) 2

The Vikings increased their winning streak to 14 by prevailing on the road. 

South Carolina uses a different format by playing five singles matches and one doubles match. If the score is tied 3-3, another winner-take-all doubles contest takes place. 

That wasn’t necessary, as Hoggard (14-1) won three singles courts as well as the doubles point with a 6-4, 6-3 victory from Zoe Ten Brink and Libby Williamson. 

The singles points came from Braelyn Roberson (6-1, 6-2 at No. 1), Audrey Sica (6-2, 6-3 at No. 3), and Allie Sauer (6-4, 6-3 at No. 5).

Next up is a home match against New Hanover at 4 p.m. Thursday.
