BOYS GOLF 

NCHSAA 4A State Championship

at Pinehurst No. 8 (Par 72)

Hoggard teammates Dylan Lewis and Maddux Cook ended their illustrious careers with top-10 finishes.

Lewis, who will continue his career at Elon, shot a 5-under-par 67 to place third. He was one stroke behind Colby Hutchens of Pinecrest and three back of two-time individual champion Will Hartman of Charlotte Catholic.

Lewis made five birdies and parred the other 13 holes. He finished the season with an area-best 18-hole scoring average of 69.8 in 13 rounds. 

Cook, a Wake Forest signee, had seven birdies (five on the back nine) en route to a 3-under 69. He tied for sixth out of 96 players. 

Topsail’s David Quinones made a hole-in-one at the 149-yard fifth hole. The junior lefty added two birdies for a 69 that put him in a three-way tie for 13th.

New Hanover was fifth out of 13 teams with a two-day total of 452. Powerhouse Pinecrest fired a 16-under 272 and won the title by 14 strokes over Broughton.

All five Wildcats shot 75 or better on the final day of action and placed inside the top 50. Chris Etters led the way by finishing in a tie for 26th.

NCHSAA 3A State Championship

at Gates Four Country Club (Par 72)

In his final high school round, North Brunswick’s Ethan Trexler fired a school record 1-under-par 71 to finish in a tie for 16th out of 97 players. 

Trexler started on the back nine and made a birdie on the par-4 14th hole, but was 2-over at the turn. 

He went on to make three more birdies, including his final two holes, and added six pars to complete his excellent round.

The senior shot 75 in the opening round to finish with a two-day total of 2-over 146.

East Lincoln’s Warren Stiglitz was the championship with a 6-under total of 138. 

South Brunswick placed 11th out of 12 teams after shooting 338-321. Nolan Bumgarner tied for 39th with rounds of 78 and 76.

NCHSAA 2A State Championship

at Pinehurst No. 6 (Par 71)

Junior Price Wheatley of Whiteville finished in a tie for 35th after shooting 82 on the final day of play. 

Wheatley made a pair of birdies as well as six pars. He shot 81 with one birdie in the first round. 

NCISAA 3A State Championship

at Bryan Park Golf Club (Par 72)

A 16-stroke improvement from the opening day of competition allowed Cape Fear Academy to move up a spot and finish fourth out of seven teams.

The Hurricanes shot 307 by counting four scores in the 70s. Leading the way was William Mann, who carded a 1-over-par 73. It was the fourth best score of the day.

William Wells (76), Ryan Korman (79) and Cash Scerri (79) had the other counting scores.

Scerri and Spencer Mills tied for 18th out of 64 players. Wells and Coastal Christian teammates Vaughn Brodowski (76) and Chet Kight (83) were 23rd.

Semifinals NCISAA 3A playoffs

The Hurricanes reached the state championship match for the second year in a row thanks to a pair of goals from Claire Furmidge.

The sophomore midfielder found the back of the net in the 16th minute. She doubled the lead in the 51st minute off an assist from Milly Kelley.

CFA (16-3-1) goalkeeper Naomi Shanewise recorded her 14th shutout of the season by stopping all three shots she faced.

The Hurricanes will host the winner of No. 2 Davidson Day/No. 3 Calvary Day on Saturday afternoon.

First round NCHSAA 3A playoffs

Senior goalkeeper Hailey Myers set a school record by making an incredible 33 saves, but the Scorpions saw their season to come a close with a record of 10-15.

SOFTBALL

Third round NCHSAA 3A playoffs

A rematch of last season’s 3A East Championship Series went to the Falcons, who scored three unearned runs over the final two innings.

South Brunswick (18-3) cruised in both games last spring en route to the state title. On this night, the Cougars managed only one hit.

In her final high school game, standout pitcher Kina Davis scattered five hits and struck out eight batters. She ended her illustrious career with a 57-14 record and 0.78 ERA. The UNC signee struck out 924 batters and issued only 66 walks in 476 innings. 

South Central (20-6) capitalized on a one-out error in the sixth inning that allowed runners to advance to second and third bases. A base hit from freshman Kailey Garner scored both.

The Cougars stranded two runners in the bottom of the frame and made another costly error with two outs in the seventh that allowed the final run to cross the plate.

Third round NCHSAA 1A playoffs

The Eagles led 9-3 after four innings, but couldn’t hold on in a heartbreaking season-ended defeat.

Jayce Hatcher went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, while Zach Sholar was 4-for-4 with three runs scored. 

Leadoff batter Davion Lewis had two hits and two runs scored, while Isaiah Lee finished with a team-best four RBI.

Hatcher’s two-run home run capped a six-run top of the fourth inning and gave East Bladen (13-11) what seemed to be a commanding lead.

Perquimans (22-5) scored seven runs in the sixth by sending 12 batters to the plate. The inning featured four walks, four singles and one double.
