BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

NCHSAA State Championship

Hoggard’s Riley Kiziah and Topsail’s Grayson Dill made history by becoming the first area boys runners to claim a NCHSAA state title.

Each school previously only had a female state champion – Hoggard (Julie Wilhelm in 4A in 1997) and Topsail (Zatha Loewen in 1A in 2006 and 2007).

For the second weekend in a row, Kiziah had to hold off Panther Creek’s Evan Rounds. The junior crossed the finish line in 15:39.70, which was two seconds ahead of Rounds (15:42.82).

At the 8A East Regional, it was a photo finish between the duo as Kiziah had a time of 15:13.34 and Rounds finished in 15:13.35.

The Vikings earned a runner-up team finish with a score of 69, which was 20 points behind Broughton.

A pair of seniors capped their stellar careers with top-five finishes. Aedon Schroeder was fourth in 15:43.73, while Gabriel Archibald followed behind in 15:50.57.

The other two counting scores came from Ralph Pfeil (23rd in 16:27.54) and Ethan Cox (45th in 16:55.93).

Like Kiziah, Dill finished off a postseason sweep by completing the course in 15:32.15. His closest competitor was Cardinal Gibbons’ James Elliott, who was four seconds behind in 15:36.52.

Teammate Owen Reece, who was the regional runner-up, was fifth with a time of 15:42.37.

The Pirates placed ninth out of 18 teams with a score of 273. New Hanover was 14th with 377. Leading the way for the Wildcats was Michael Enriquez (10th in 16:01.89).

GIRLS TENNIS

Myers Park 5, Hoggard 0

NCHSAA 8A state championship

A first trip to the dual team state championship didn’t turn out the way the Vikings had hoped, as they suffered defeats in all five singles matches that were completed.

Freshmen twins Braelyn and Zannah Roberson both fell in third-set tiebreakers.

Braelyn had a score of 4-6, 6-1, 11-9 at No. 1, while Zannah’s tight match was 6-1, 2-6, 10-6.

Classmate Kenzie Le was winning 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-3 at No. 5 when play was stopped due to Myers Park (16-0) reaching five points.

The fourth freshman in Hoggard’s (20-1) starting lineup – Zoe Ten Brink – fell 6-2, 7-5. Kate Bennington (6-3, 6-2 at No. 4) and Allie Sauer (6-0, 6-2 at No. 6) also competed hard.
