Cape Fear Ghost Crabs 10, Shallotte Shallywags 5
An excellent offensive performance from the Ghost Crabs, which featured 14 hits from nine players, kept them 1/2 game ahead of Jacksonville for second place in the Coastal Division.
Brock Polilli (Tiffin, Ohio) was 3-for-4 with a double, triple, two RBI, and two runs scored. Ryan Seagroves (Brunswick CC) went 2-for-2 with a walk, a hit by pitch, two RBI, and one run.
A pair of local standouts – Jack Cuba (Catawba/New Hanover) and Trey Pierce (Brunswick CC/WCA) each finished 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Both teams scored twice in the second inning. Cape Fear (20-9, 17-8) took the lead for good on a two-out RBI single from Pierce in the fifth.
Polilli doubled home Cuba and Dylan Stacks (North Brunswick) an inning later to increase the lead to 5-2. He later crossed the plate on a passed ball.
Relief pitcher Zach Steagall (Brunswick CC/West Brunswick) earned the win by allowing three runs in five innings.
Shallotte (5-21, 5-21) first baseman Cody Crafton (Bluefield, W.Va.) went 3-for-4 with three RBI.
Justin Sheffield (Florida Southwestern) was also 3-for-4 with three runs, while Xavier Diaz (Farleigh Dickinson, N.J.) finished 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs.
Jacksonville Ospreys 4, Oak Island Loggerheads 1 (5 innings)
The Loggerheads’ lone hit was an RBI single from Rocco Tenuta (Hillsdale, Mich.) in the top of the first inning.
Blake Faulkner (UNC Pembroke) worked a leadoff walk in the third, but the next three Oak Island (12-11, 12-11 Coastal Division) batters struck out.
Jacksonville (19-8, 16-8) scored all four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning before the game was called due to inclement weather.
